What is this badge?

master brummie
This is a photo of Carlo John Niner and his wife Rachel (née Elliott) with their son, taken about 1917. Can anyone tell me what the badge is that Carlo is wearing. His grandson thinks it may be a British Rail badge. Sorry I can't get the close up of the badge any clearer.

It's the silver war badge,it was to let people know the wearer had served in the great war.
Judy, have sent you a website with explanation.

Thanks Ray. I have looked at the website and can see that it is indeed a Silver War Badge. I have always wondered what it might be, so it is good to have solved the mystery, thanks to you. I shall report back to his grandson, who is a cousin of mine.

Carlo lived at 3 Back 105 Angelina Street in Birmingham and was with the Army Territorial Force, South Midland Brigade RFA. He was discharged after 175 days due to sickness, in 1915.

I didn't know that Alf. I really didn't know what the badge was, neither did his grandson. I'm please that I now know. What a speedy response from the forum, yet again :)

Hi Brummie Nick

Thanks for that information. I had never heard of this badge before, but now understand more about it.

Jayell. I believe that the badge your Grandfather is wearing is the silver badge, issued to service men in the Great War, who were invalided out of the services,to indicate that they had severed King and country, this came about because of the hostility shown to wards civilian men not in "not fighting for the King and country"

The badge had to be issued after great out cry from the public that wounded and soldiers on leave were being harried by some people with white feathers and sometimes attacked.

They also issued a badge for the Peace Time? Serviceman
All National Servicemen are entitled to one I have mine and quite a few Forum member have theirs, perhaps someone has one to hand.:)

They are still available if any members who did National Service

Look Here they are free of charge.
