A couple of months ago, I can recall a member posting this question - re: family history. Can't find it now. Can anyone help?

Many thanks...Florence :)

Why pay to use the Ancestry Site.Pop in to your local Library were you
can have 60 mins free use of Ancestry site except 1911 census
Hope this helps.

John,

I did take advantage of Ancestry at our local library just the once. Nearly 30 mins. of my hour had gone, by the time they had got the computer restarted. It is very difficult to pick up the thread of a clue, that you are chasing, only to find you are out of time.
Having said that, if you wanted to see how Ancestry works, and see some of the records, then you have nothing to lose by booking an hour at the library.

Ann

Thanks John - Many a time I've used Ancestry at the library which I found a great help but now I'm after the 1911 census.

Ann B...sounds like you subscribe to Ancestry. For any of the other members who don't, if you are close enough, visit Solihull Library. You are allowed an hour on the computers. All you do is type your ticket number in and you're there. It takes about 5 minutes from entering the building. And you can you can help yourself to another half hour with just a few clicks.

Florence :)

Florence,

Yes I do subscribe to Ancestry. But I am watching the Find My Past site, as I believe they are going to include the 1911 as part of their package in the future. In which case, I may take a break from Ancestry. As you know it is expensive to pay as you go on the 1911 census, at the moment.
Ancestry, I believe, are not going to have the 1911 census. But they are always adding new records. A lot of London records have been added recently, and they gave me more details of my grandmother's death and burial. Their directories are also very useful.

The computers at my local library get very busy, so you need to book. Sounds like access is a little easier at Solihull Library.

Ann

Ann.you are very unlucky.my local library Great Barr have 9 computers. When I looked in to-day only 6 were being used.I have
never had to book.I have had a good go at the 1911 census
paying some 25 odd quid.I have only 1 more enquiry left but have
made lots of interesting finds.

Ann...I thought a subscription to Ancestry did include the 1911 census and that the libraries had a limited edition for public use. So thanks for that information.

John...Like you, I've never had to book at Solihull and they have lots more computers there...You've done well finding most of the censuses for around £25. How many did you print off for that cost?

Florence :)

Actually, I don't mind that my local library gets busy. I've been using the same library for nearly 50 years, almost since it opened, even when I lived in Somerset. So I am pleased to see it full with youngsters.

But, having heard on the radio, that I could have a months free trial on Ancestry, I took that up. I then started my tree on Ancestry and uploaded photographs. I now have several trees for various family members, and have uploaded hundreds of photographs to these trees. Including photographs that have been emailed to me. So, now it looks like an archive. So, it's a bit difficult for me to let it go now. I justify it as my hobby. A hobby that I enjoy, that now involves, relations in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Setting up these trees on Ancestry, and I don't think I could have done such a good job on any other site, has given me so much pleasure. And , from the messages I receive, pleasure to others. So, I guess, I shall stay with Ancestry. I can't fault them.

Hello Florence
I have had a look at Find My Past 1911 census Site and found I took the
£6.95 option to start with this gives you 60 credits.it costs 10 credits for each
transacton.I found that I went through them in no time.
Then I went for the £24.95 giving 280 credits, thats 28 transactons and I have just
1 left.There is a £49.95 giving 600 credits.Beware if you want a copy of the
orignal census, that would be 30 credits
Best Wishes

Hi Ann...From your experience Ancestry does seem a good site to join....I had noticed the 14 day trial so I'll give it a go myself then probably subscribe. If I can gain half the enjoyment you obviously have, then it will be well worth the fee.

Hi John...Thank you for your information. It is very helpful. I have a good idea of what I need to do now. The prospect of finding ancestors on the 1911 is quite exciting!

:) All the best....Florence

I understand that all Birmingham and Solihull Libraries that have Computers subscribe to a version of Ancestry.

Yes ,There are plenty of Computers at Solihull Library in the main section where you can access Ancestry , the NBI , Family Search and other Family history Sites .

However , if you wish to use the Heritage room it is wise to telephone the Library before hand as it is often used for Paid Class's or Private Group meetings.
This includes Weekday's and Evenings and some Saturdays.

Using your Library card from your own P/c you are able to access -
The 24 -Hour Virtual Library, this includes-
The Times online 1785-1985 , News Uk, Know Uk,
Britannina online, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford English Dictionary, Grove Music online, Grove Art online, Cobra, CANS Advice, BSI Bristish Standards Online.

Hello Bo...Thank you for the added information about Solihull library. This will be very useful to lots of people...As it happens I was there yesterday and the Heritage room was occupied. Had to use the main area - 1 computer left! There were lots of students mostly on study leave.

Hello Ann B
It is very interesting tracing all our relatives, since starting some 3 years
ago I have found relatives that I had no knowledge of,like my G/G grand
father b.1813 in staffs. in 1838 he was sentenced to 15 yrs in jail and
transported to Australia were he died in1876.All for stealing 2 sides of
bacon.
I have used Genes Re-united for my tree and have 752 names.
I have been able to find other people who have trees corresponding to
lots of familys on my tree, but have had no luck with my own branch.
Would you be so kind to check if they are on the Ancestry site.
Try William Hughes b.1809c, b at Bredon.Joseph Hughes b1853 at Westmancote.William Hughes b.1850 at Bredon.
Best wishes
John Hughes

Hi John.

William Hughes is on the 1851 census at Bredon, living with his father Benjamin Hughes.

Also on the census are Williams wife Ann, and his two children Elizabeth and William H.

census attached. He is also on the 1871 and the 1881.

Hi John,

It looks as if they are included in Hughes Family Tree. And there is actually a photograph of Joseph Hughes, born 2 Apr 1852 Westmancote, father William Hughes, born 21 Oct 1810, Bredon. Joseph had a brother Henry, born about 1855, and a brother William H. Hughes, born about 1851. So looks like your family.

This is the photo, outside Clematis Cottage Upper Westmancote, Bredon.

Hello again John,

I am pleased it is a match. Thought it was. I'll make contact with the tree owner and pass on your details. And then all you can do is to hope that they will respond.

It is up to you, of course, but now I have your details, you may wish to delete your contact details from your last post. It is best not to have too much personal information on the net.

All the best Ann

Thanks barrie for the information about the census details about the Hughes's
