Washwood Heath Road

Thanks both. I struggled to pinpoint the modern view, so much changed today, with most street level frontages now retail.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone on this thread could help. My parents are looking for an old friend who lived on washwood heath road from early 60s to late 70s.

His name is Errol brown/Reid. I know he was a teenager in the 70's. He is black but was adopted so lived with white parents. He also had a brother.

Does this ring a bell? Thanks so much

This was taken near the junction with Rogers Road (right). To the left, you can just make out two houses in the process of being built (I think it was quite unusual to find that in postcard images). The two houses are to the immediate left in the modern Streetview. Screenshot_20260724_192359_Chrome.jpg

I think this one might be taken near the junction of Wright Road and Aston Church Road. The church in the distance could be St Marks, just beyond the railway bridge. The buildings on the immediate right have gone but the premises where the two men are standing remain (albeit altered, now a domestic, white painted building).

It's pretty scary the way children seem to be hanging around in the middle of the tram tracks.Screenshot_20260724_191633_Chrome.jpgScreenshot_20260724_200018_Maps.jpg

This is my Grandparents cake shop which they owned before moving down to Bournemouth in the late 50s. I was told it was on Washwood Heath Road, does anyone recognise it or where it could be?

I just put that first line above into Google AI.

I don't know how accurate it is, I have found Ted Haynes greengrocers in Kelly's directory for 1964 and that's all.

I can only identify the location for these 2 shops in Kelly's 1955 directory.

If it is actually in the vicinity indicated by Google there's a good chance it is still standing. The photo has a few clues but unfortunately all the shops in that area now have shutters and large name boards which would cover the smaller upper windows (if they still exist). There are loaves in the window so it was obviously not selling just cakes. Do you know how many years the shop was operating for? I have a feeling it falls between the 1955 and 1964 Kelly's that I have.

If there is a kind member who has access to the british newspaper archive they could probably look for an advert for the shop.

Can't say for certain with such a tight shot but it doesn't look like any of the buildings from St Margaret's Road upwards, the windows are all wrong.

When I saw it, it reminded me more of the buildings by Asquith Road (686 - 700 Washwood Heath Road) and looking on google maps you can see some similarities. Just surmising though.

And on the 1939 register there is a baker at 694 Washwood Heath Road and comparing the brick work between and around the upper windows it could be it.

The 2008 view on google street view gives the best comparison.
