That's an interesting idea Mike!!
As long as they can make it survive vandalism. Recently there was some terrible damage done to new graves in the new section of the Uplands.
I have had inscriptions put in the Remembrance book at Lodge Hill for Mum & Dad, as they were cremated.

I've just been to Warstone Lane Cemetery Open Day!!!
So many friendly faces with the Friends of Key Hill and Warstone Lane Cemetery, music from the Sea-Cadets and a very interesting hearse!!
Also won prizes on the Tomb-bola. The weather was lovely this year too. Well worth a visit.

Just a few pics didn't have time to take many thanks to those who gave their support. It was lovely to see you and your husband rosie.

I took this photo a while ago, I think it's the right area for D1198 a public grave where Nan's little sister Fanny Elizabeth Jones was buried. She was only four.
I'm not sure why there are archways bricked up in the wall, it's a strange place for windows!
rosie.

Been to WL today with my sister Pam and our cousin Brian to visit our sister's Renee's resting place we have placed a beautiful poem there for Renee what our brother wrote for her i just hope it doesn't go missing like the angel did.We didn't do any tidying up today but when we go again we will do some.We also went and located our g/grandad in the catacombs thank's to all on here who gave us the info.

I know someone like Brian/Wendy or Lesley will be along with the answers but am sure they were not windows and were probably blocked for sound safety reason.

Think it is just a double thickness wall - the arches are help take the stress of the buildings that were there - agree it does look odd!

Sections O & P behind the mint have been cleared of much more undergrowth in the last fe weeks - it is now possible to walk along it all - just watch where you are walking still! A few more side branches to come off with the long handled loppers, but working on Sections B & D now opposite the Lodge.
I was in there Sat having a good fire, and passed through at Lunch today - will look out for the Poem on Tuesday when I pass through to the Pen Room.

Hi Brian, Thanks for your hard work!! Hope to visit again soon. We would like to re-gravel "Eliza" maybe in Spring when he feels better. Have already got the weed blanket-stuff, and probably it will be green slate chippings if that's OK?

Is it OK to put flowering bulbs on public graves?

(Maps won't be too long now, have had some problems with a couple of sections!)

rosie.

Hi Rosie,

Anytime you are visiting, please feel free to snip off any side branches within reach (Health & Safety - they may poke your eye out - so it's Ok to prune them before they get you!).
One of our volunteers David Lewis has dug out several graves in KH along the Icknield St frontage and put down weed suppresant material with new chippings on top - looks good - feel free to do as many as you like!

2 years ago we were given some surplus bulbs from the grass mowing contractors - Most went on the KH islands, and in front of and above the catacombs, but I put the Hyacinths in the Publics - 3 bulbs per plot - smelt lovely in the spring.
Bulbs are perfect in unmarked or marked Publics or anywhere they will be mowing/strimming - They don't usually start until after Easter - so Spring flowering types are great - We have loads of Bluebells, some Snowdrops, a few Tulips, and quite a few Daffodils. There are also some Crocuses and dwarf grape Hyacinths in KH.
Again - please free to plant them in anywhere you fancy - all makes the place look better in the long run!

Brian

We've put the new green chippings on Eliza Pressdee's grave at last!
We managed to get two of the bags to the graveside on the trolley and Richard Beardall of the Friends of Key Hill and Warstone Lane, took the other two for us on his way to do a Tour of the Cemetery. Many thanks Richard!!!
We "donated" the original gravel to the grave "next door", and put the weed-inhibitor down, then four bags of the chippings which were quoted on the original estimate for the Grave 70 years ago, but which were too expensive then!! We put a few bulbs too by the kerbstone.

What a quick reply!!
Thank you!
I forgot to say that the people at the Garden Centre loaded the car for us, and I got an "Over 60's" discount card to use on that day and certain Wednesdays!
rosie.

Thank you all for your kind comments!
When we first found the grave there were so many fallen trees and branches everywhere, it was overgrown and dangerous, but now, thanks to Key Hill Brian and the "Friends" the area is clear and tidy and respectable again. The paths have been revealed and are safer to walk on. The compost heap is diminishing too!!
rosie.

Wonder if anyone was lucky enough to receive this gift in their Christmas stockings?!! Takes a while to load but there're views of various burial grounds which might be of interest. (Scroll past the last few views of 2012). The July photo of St. Phillip's has some incorrect info. The pillar memorial didn't fall on the two Town Hall workers. They fell from the building. Viv.

We went to Warstone this morning for a very quick visit as it was so cold. Bulbs are trying to come through, one grave had some tiny flowers poking up (primulas?).
The "Back of the Mint" is looking brilliant now that the trees are more controlled.
In Key hill the crocuses are coming out by the new gates, and snowdrops too, roll on Spring!!!
(Hope you're feeling better Brian!!)
rosie.

HI Rosie,

Passed through KH/WL about 2-2.50 today - as you say Crocuses are out near KH entrance and on the island at the bottom of the slope - Snowdrops are looking good just before the vaults too!

Checked WL - I hmanaged a fire there on Friday - big pile of ash now near the compost area! Looks like to Railway sleepers may be cemented in - tried to dig one out but hit what seemed to be concrete - out of practise for much heavy work though - have to try again when it's warmer!

Lot more open now - you can look into all the apartments now and see what they've done with the Mint!

Brian

Hello - I have just rediscovered a request I should have made some while back - It is believed that Sylvanus Gill is buried in Warstone Lane Cemetery. I recall looking some 12 years back but finding nothing. Can anyone help?

Done a bit of searching and have found the reference I was looking for -

WL
1915 GILL Silvanus M M 66

Can someone advise who I find this section please?

Thanks

Bernie

Hi Bernie - I can't help you with the location (doesn't matter how many times I walk round that cemetery I still don't know the sections by letter) but I have noticed there is another burial in M 66 - Harry Gill buried 1891

section-m-annotated.jpg

Attached is a map of section M, with plot 66 highlighted. I can't look for you tomorrow - will late in the week be OK Bernie?

Oh wow thanks. We are going toThe Custard Factory tomorrow so will wander over to the JQ and take look. Discovered that there are 117 Gills buried there most related I fear. Gt Grandfather seems a black sheep. Later my part of family converted to RC which may be why Mum knew so little of them but think my Gt GF is there also - a Harry Gill nut not necessarily the one in M66 as the name Harry ran through the family.

Bernie, if you find the big obelisk next to the massive tree in section M, that will give you a fix. It is M164.
(if you stand above the catacombs looking across them, you'll see the obelisk at abt '11 o'clock)
