Warstone Lane Cemetery

According to Fiindmypast, there appear to be two Charles H Phillips who died in 1911 and are buried in Warstone Lane. Register numbers are:
67167
67265

I'm sure that Key Hill Brian will be able to give you more details. Do you have a date of death as it will be useful to locate right one :)

I have just found my gt gt grandparents John McKnight buried 1873 H 11156 and Margaret McKnight buried 1887 H 1117 in Warstone Lane are these public graves.

I also have two children Samuel McKnight buried 1851 aged 7 section F 559. William McKnight buried 1862 aged 14 section E 273.

Any help would be great before I start traipsing around the cemetery.

Hi Wendy,
My 3x Great Grandmother Jane Blakemore is in Public F 557, I'm afraid it's all grassed over! 2x Great Grandmother is in E 298 and that's all grass too. I don't know about section H though.
I hope this helps a little!

Well, that was an interesting trip - the plans gave me a bit of brain strain!
I think that I have all the ones I was looking for apart from one - though only one memorial, I'm afraid. I'll add the location shot in a short while. I want to ask Wendy to check the adjoining grave names before adding the pictures here.

Wright memorial looks splendid, as do the catacombs - though the bloody ivy is reappearing. Will take some long handled secateurs next time! Pulled out a few weeds....

Margaret McKnight: Photo taken facing Vyse Street. H1117 is to the right of the Betteridge grave (H1107), which has rails only showing.

John McKnight: Photo taken facing Vyse Street. H1156 is to the left of Lucy Aurott (?) and the camera side of Oliver Haddleston.

William McKnight: Photo taken with back to Vyse St. Pad of paper indicates position of E273. [E311 is first gravestone to left (Brelsforth) and E324 next left (Duncan McBain Taylor)]

Samuel McKnight: This one was a real struggle! Back to Vyse Street.
The photo shows that the Chalmers memorial is 1538 F, but 1538 isn't a section F number, so I assumed that it was wrong and went for the next one to triangulate with - 546, which would mean that Chalmers is 560 (Wendy later confirmed this). Think thae stonemason must have had a bad day! The flat stone on the camera side on Chalmers is Morton (561)
Unfortunately, the marble memorials don't have numbers (or not ones that I could find)

Hi Les and Wendy, when I was looking for public F486 for Charles Hilliar with 20 occupants, it had been re-sold as a private grave for the family Instone, and would have had a gravestone and kerbs but they were laid down buried by Health & Safety according to BMSGH. F 488 was also a public grave but is now private for William Green!!

Charles H Phillips:
There are two possible Charles H Phillips who die/death registered in 1911 - one in vault 32K and one in 12 (which is almost certainly catacomb vault I2)

The vault 32K (shown below) has a date of death (28th Dec 2010) and an age, 38 years. Does this help you identify which is yours?

If this is the one, then you can see the actual location of the slab by clicking here and looking at post #18. 32K is the slab beyond 30K.
[If this isn't the correct Charles Phillips, I'll find you a picture of the doorway to catacomb vault I2]

Les thank you so much for doing this at least I have an idea now where they are buried. Pity there wasn't a headstone but as I said at least I know where my great great grandparents and two of their children are.

Hi Lyn.Some people have no respect.We was going to put a bigger angel there in Sept has our sister would have been 60 and wanted to put something special there but it has put us off.So now we have decided on planting a rose.See you tomorrow.Irene

Just awful Irene so sorry to hear your angel is missing...drugs the scurge of our society, they will steal anything to sell to feed their habit. I know Brian will be upset he has worked so hard. He is having problems with his computer at the moment so will not be on. I hope this is reported so people are aware whats going on!

hello irene ;
sorry to hear of your loss but as wendy says its a mamouth tasked today with all these theiving articles about
you dare not go alone to visit your family graves in any cemetry around birmingham;for the fear of being attacked and robbed;
many years ago i reported on here about the carrying ons at warstone lane and i was followed around the cem;
so left and not gone back since as wendy says many times go in a group and be safe
i have visted many a cems around and seen the old problem of destroyed head stones i even went to south yardlely on wenesday
and as we drove in to the chapel i was appalledto see the mass destruction of ead stones
that was a well kept cem for years ; there is only one i have come across and that is in sutton cem a well maitainned cem ; and with a sercurity ;
they should have kept the railings around and get the people tpoo lock the gates at a certain time like they used to do ;
years ago there was sercurity and grave diggers around whom maintained these cems; but they done away with them ;
still as wendy says its the sign of the changes a different cult of the human race ; druggies and the homeless
and the theives whom steal to sell on at markets for what ever reason ;we also have it carrying on down here in worcestershire ;
so until some body takes heed of the youth of today its gonna get worse i hate to say ;
so be in mind go in a couple and not on your own ; astonian;;

We had a quick look around today, just to see, although we have no rels here that we know of,but thought how nice it looked, there are some nice memorials there.
Sorry to hear about your angel though Irene, as Alan nad Wendy say, the druggies will take anything to get a "fix" and then leave their dangerous rubbish behind them, sad state of the country today.
Although I can see where Alan is coming from with the railings and locking cemetries, it shouldn't have to happen, a few ruining things for most people.

I Was Wandering If Anyone Can Help Me My Great Grandfather HAROLD FLOYD Is In One Of The Vaults In The Catacombs.Im Trying To Locate The Vault Number.Thank's Irene

Hi Irene
Is this him? you don't mention a date
FLOYD Harold 1911 I 5 (Vault) 68275

I 5 is one of those bricked u[p 'doorways' on the upper level of the catacombs
They have numbers inscribed above them. I think I 10 is very left hand one - so count along.....

Brian

I have marked vault I5 on this picture. The picture was taken before the last of the ivy was removed.
I-5.jpg

So, as you stand in the catacomb circle, I5 is on the top layer, to the left of the big central doorway. Looking at my photos, I'm not sure that all the doors still have their numbers, but I1 & 2 definitely do (they are the first double pair to the left of the central doorway) - if you zoom in on this photo, you can see the 2 quite clearly.

hi leslam
very nice picture of the cato;s it bring back memory.s for me as i lived up the rd as was always in there most time
and in those days in the fifties half was damaged and broken into and the pathe ways was terrible and really disgusting dirty and
found alsorts of garbage in them ; its nice to se how they have ben cleaned up by the team alot of hard work and spirit
to go in and smarten the place up well done guys ;
have a nice day best wishes to everyone astonian;;

Hi Brian.Thank's A Lot Im Sure This Is Him.When We Go To Warstone Lane We Will Have A Look.We Are Hopeing To Go And Do A Bit Of Tidying Up.Thank's Again Irene.

We went to Warstone today for a brief visit to tidy a few graves, and one of the kerbstones had been knocked out of line. We put it back, but as The Friends of Key Hill and Warstone Lane work so hard to restore the Cemeteries it's a shame when damage occurs.
The Cemetery looked lovely in the afternoon sun, and the men were strimming so it will look good for the Open Day on Saturday. Let's hope the weather lasts!!

HI Rosie,

Must have missed you - i was in WL about 1.15 before going to Pen Room and again 12.45 - 14.30
Thanks for tidying up the kerbstone - the motor mowers are constantl;ybashing them about.................
I hope to pop over Thurs or Fri and tidy up the shrubs where the Open day will be by - Plenty of branches lying around that need removing.

Hope to see you Saturday?

Brian

Hi Brian,

It's a shame we missed you, hope to call in on Saturday...ailments permitting!!!!

Apparently the traffic Warden was looking at me while I did the one in E section (Vyse Street) Suppose it did look strange having a walking stick in one hand and a child-size rake in the other!!! Not forgetting

the brush under my elbow!! I took a few beer cans home to my bin and realised after I should have used them in the garden as slug traps.

rosie.
