On Monday 20th November 1899 a touring team from Africa visited the lower Aston grounds. The natives were novices at the game but displayed tiger-like
agility even jumping over Villa defenders. The half time refreshment was stout. Bamboozled by the guile of Freddy Wheldon they proclaimed him the 'Mightiest Football Chief' The burlesque ended in a home win by 7 goals to 4
with Billy George charging up to score. The end of the Century was in site

I am not old enough to remember this, but I do remember two Nigerian internationals signing for the Villa in the early 1970's - one was called Kapendwi or something like that?

Agreed, from memory Emmet Kpengwe and Freddie Mwila Their names stick in the memory since foreign players were few and far between then. I seem to recall a lot of publicity for Oscar Arce around that time as well. Did he ever play?

Hi Arthur, Keith and Glaciermint, for the record Kapengwe and Mwila came
from Zambia, played 3 times and 1 game respectively for the first team during
1969-70 season. Luis Oscar Fullone Arce an Argentinian, arrived July 1968

Its was fortunate that Oscar Arce didn't line up along side of Barry Hole? That could have been embarrasing on the team sheet?

Ah, the incomparable cricket radio commentator Brian Johnston who reportedly once said on air "The bowler's Holding; the batsman's Willey" (Michael Holding of the West Indies bowling to Peter Willey of England in the Test match at the Oval in 1976).
