Will do that Alf. I have been watching a farm programme and the working of it late at night on animal planet. That's been good. Jean.

Ive just watched episodes 1 & 2 on Iplayer. What a remarkable series. I thought the tongue looked a bit grotesque, nailed to a board to keep it upright. I quite like tongue myself, not like that though lol.

The cider mill..... I wonder how that'll turn out? I wouldn't mind having a taste. Isnt that horse quite something? I was amused too by the Ram, he thought he was quite Jack The Lad. The expert who provided him got very passionate about him, not that I'm implying any missdeeds mind lol

Thanks for the Book link Rod. I loved showing the Christmas Pudding making in the washing boiler and the Clockwork Spit for the Roasting in front of the open fire to my lads after telling them for years about it and getting funny looks. The programme was worth it just for that.:)

Thanks to you Alf, we enjoyed the Christmas on the Victorian Farm. Looking forward to more down on the farm.
Mike

I have to agree, he did get himself in a bit of a lather, but living out in the country we become used to this sort of thing:rolleyes:

A worthy successor to the Victorian Kitchen and V K Garden.

Smashing programme thoughly enjoyed it especially the Christmas one. Nice to see the Tamworth pigs as well!:)

Yes those piggies were smashing, have you seen the porkers at Packington Hall Farm Wendy on the A51 towards Lichfield?

Arkrite I loved the Victorian Kitchen and its sister programme, V K Garden, they made evry good viewing, did I imagine it, or wasn't there a similar programme set in Medieval times? Also I think way back in the 70's they made a programme which placed people living in huts I suppose from very ancient times, it was called Living In The Past. Thats besides the much later takes with that family living through a Blitz, and Home Front scenario. Its all good stuff, I wish there was more of it.

saw em making cider never did like it now I know why Rotten apples:rolleyes: saw them using some machines that were outright dangerous few fingers missing on the farms I bet but good viewing:thumbsup:

There was a program on recently ( filmed at a medieval house in Herefordshire ) about the cooking of a medieval banquet. The recipes had not aged well. Anything to do with history I am interested in.However I end up knowing not very much about an awful lot. The History Channel has a lot to answer for. So has the BHF. I am like a kid in a sweetshop here.

OtherHalf...Real cider is nothing like Bulmers or Magners. Herefordshire and other counties have small producers well worth finding. The style and taste is endless. My drink is beer of which the county has some excellent small brewers. While we are at it we also produce wine. I have not yet found a ( legal) distillery, but I'm looking. Must go ...Oz and James Beer Tour is on.:P

I agree with you Arkrite. I love cider, but won't have a Bulmers or Magners or the like - that's just like flavoured water. It's got to be the real stuff - you can't beat that, but you can't find it at many pubs.

Ha Devon. You must be able to get the real stuff there. Will agree pubs are the last place to look for the real cider. Rough cider can be an aquired taste but not all of it is rough by any means. I have had home produced cider brandy, that is nectar. The old chap who produced it is dead now, I hope he past on his skills.

did drink cider with Guinness years many years ago stopped off in alcester once on way back from fishing trip and drank scrumpy didnt hit me till got outside violently sick all way back my Gaffer made me get out and clean his car at agarage on the way back to Brum:( a brand new humber sceptre was he pleased or what I was 18 stopped drinking shortly after that :D

I like cider, I also like the Magners and Bulmers stuff even though theyre two very different animals when compared with the real stuff!!

Alf when does the show go out on real telly, as opposed to Iplayer I mean. I'm looking forward to it.

A couple of years ago we visited a real old working cider barn and press in Dunsford, Devon, which still produces many different types of real cider. Everything was much as it was in Victorian days, but everything was still in working order. We bought some flagons of both medium, dry and vintage cider, and were invited to return in the Autumn to see them pressing the apples. Unfortunately we didn't get round to it, but may well do at another time. Here are some photos.

Guiness and Cider!! no wonder you were ill. I worked partime in a pub some years ago and never ceased to be amazed at the strange mixtures people drank. Localy we have a drink called snakebite and black. It is a mix of lager, cider and black currant. Very potent and sickly, probably scrambles your brains aswell. I rarely drink cider but appreciate the craft of making it.
It is surprising how few people actualy work full time on a farm these days. They have contractors for lots a jobs. This also means the farmer does not have the financial outlay for a lot of specialised machinery which lies idle for most of the year. I think the hardest job is that of being a small holder. Small return for a lot of work. You realy have to love that job to do do it. Some of the most contented people I know despite the worries they have.

The family and i were on holiday in Coombe Martin a few years ago, we paid a visit to Hancocks Cider farm in Winkley, ( i think thats where it was). The apples were still growing at that time, but we sat through a video presentation on how the cider was made, afterwards we had a guided tour around the farm, we purchased some flagons of cider to take home with us. My son who was sitting in the back seat of the car, decided to open one of the flagons, for a taste, by the time we got back to Coombe Martin he was so drunk he could'nt stand, unfortunately he was too old to have his bottom spanked, but he has never drunk cider since. :D

:Done of his new fangled gadgets:P back to the cider:)re Williams post I think if in our youth we had cider in moderation things may have been different I like your son had a bit too much and it put us off for life :)if I had worked on a farm my tastes would have been very different:)
