Hi,
Doing a bit of research on Military Field cooking equipment history.
In the 1930s, Turley and Williams Ltd started making burners for petrol and similar fuel. These burners ended up as the Number 2, 3 and 4 stoves used by the armed forces for WW2 and beyond. The first patent was in 1936

I found a thread, which mentions Turley and Williams, and presume it to be the same company.

As I understand it, based on numerous registered patents - the company was Turley and Williams, when Herbert Newey was involved with the company - but I don't know yet when they started trading. The address is Turley and Williams, Ltd., Reliance Works, Green Street, Deritend, Birmingham. Phone: Midland 257. Trading as Turwill, Birmingham. Area No. 4.

Then it appears to change to Turley and Williams (1925), presumably when Newey left the company.

Then in 1936, Charles Donald Smith becomes involved, and the petrol burners and stoves start to be patented. Between 1938 and 1939, the company name changes from Turley and Williams (1925) to Turley and Williams Limited - with Smith still the main or named designer of the patents.

At some point they also traded as the British Safety Stove Company Limited.

The post about Highgate Road suggests that the factory moved or expanded and kept both sites.
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can give me any details on the move or expansion, and when the factory closed or was taken over by, please.

This is their Number 2 stove

No 2 1.jpg

Their Number 3 stove

No 3 1.JPG

And their Number 3 oven

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Mark

Turley & Williams is mentioned at Green Street in 1911 and up to 1930. In that year a fire gutted the three-storey building.

In 1939 at Highgate St. Works.
The company was registered in 1910 at 51 and 53 Coventry Street.

The 1930 Green Street fire articles are attached for reference.

A slight addition to the Coventry Street address, there's a reference in 1905 for that address too.

The business at Highgate Street was at #133.

In 1957 they were still trading as Turley and Williams but as part of the Flavel Group (Maidstone and London). In 1960 there's reference to a Leamington Spa address.

Thanks.
Patents show that they stayed at 2 Green Street until 1939, with the 1940 patent showing Highgate street.
I wonder if 2 Green Street was also known as Reliance Works, or whether that was another site down the road from number 2

On 1911 census he is a director of a limited company.
On 1921 census he is listed as a manufacturer, brass founder, coppersmith etc. Employer at Reliance Works, Green Street.
Looks as if he died in 1932

The 1938 Kellys lists the British Safety Stove company in Green St . The 1939 Kellys does not show them at Green St. Indeed that number is not listed. I Note that the patent was granted in 1940 but applied for on 5th January 1939. The application date would have been when the application had been received and accepted, and was possibly written in 1938., Turley and Williams are listed in Green St in 1938, but in Highgate st in 1939

I'm presuming that as they went into liquidation in 1925, and Turley and Williams don't appear as actual people on patents from that date forward, that this Charles Smith bought the company and name in 1925, to give himself a well known brand name

I think that you are right. The business was immediately re-registered as a successor company styled Turley & Williams (1925) Ltd.
Wound itself up but wanted to continue trading under essentially the same identity, the proprietors (or new investors) would immediately form a new company to acquire the assets and goodwill.

After some amount of time the 1925 would be dropped.

As well as inventing the Number 2 and Number 3 Stoves, Charles Donald Smith invented this traveling kitchen, which the RAF adopted and used in trucks and trailers
