They are at our Brummie accent again

hi.just listening to a prog on bbc7,and they are taking the pi out of the brummy accents again. why is it when some thing STUPID is broadcast.the voice of the said person has to be a brummy voice ?,i think it is insulting."WE ARE FAR FROM STUPID"and brummies "do not fall in love wih cows".
I talk to the cows when they put their heads over the hedge lol xx

People here then get very confused as to just what part of Belgium I come from; when I tell them Birmingham they are amazed.

Had a phone call yesterday from England and though the call was not from Brum I could tell straight away that the caller was a Brummie. His voice gave me such a warm feeling.

So all you Brummies please don't be ashamed of or try to hide your accent, its 'great'!

Graham.

We are what we are and are roots can never be changed, my foundations are in Brum and I am proud of everything it stands for! The saddest people in this world are those that do not accept themselves for what and who they are trying to be something you are not makes for a very unhappy life....Rant over!!

It doesn't matter what accent or dialect is or what country you come from there will be someone who doesn't like it. Some people don't like New York accents and there are many more but as Mermaid says that is who you are. What give the best impression is the person behind the accent. Mo

Well done you last three ladies it is the person within and mind you sometimes what comes out of your mouth and I'm not refering to accents. I can't stand it when actors try to imitate the Brummy twang as it almost always is over exaggerated. Jean.

Me and the Mrs have lived in Herefordshire a long time ( 40 yrs and 36 yrs) People still ask us how long we will be staying at the holiday caravan park. I have never been ashamed of my Midland accent which mixed with a slight stammer probably does sound strange. There is no mystery where we originated from.

[There is no mystery where we originated from./QUOTE]

Me neither, although most people can usually get as far as the Midlands but not identify Birmingham. Mo
I am originally from Walsall, the mrs from Halesowen. We have both given up denying we are Brummies though we aren't. Most people haven't a clue when it comes to the geography of the midlands and numerous sub dialects of the region. The dialects are a study all of their own. Still its not a bad brush to be tarred with.

I’m reading Michael Wood’s In Search of Shakespeare. In chapter one entitled: Roots, he makes the following comment. Quote: “His linguistic roots are here too – not in the more socially acceptable speech of London or the court. Shakespeare spoke with a Warwickshire accent like Brummie today; more Lenny Henry than Laurence Olivier.

Despite the author’s misconception in considering that Lenny Henry possesses a Brummie accent, although he did use the phrase ‘like Brummie’ one can readily understand why Brummies always win arguments with the final shot…”Well, Shakespeare was a Brummie…”

Well both Maureen and I come from Handsworth - I don't know whether she sounds like me or not LOL - But one thing for sure - she sounds like an English lady! That is all I am taken for here in Canada - and to be quite frank i don't really care - I am 'Me'

Exactly Beryl you are you and a happy birthday [off thread] hope you have enjoyed it ex Handsworth Brummie. Jean.

My Brummie twang comes through when I'm angry or stressed too. I love to hear the Brummie accent, I have been away from Brum for a good few years now.

I have been here over 30 years and people think I have just arrived. Although people don't always know other than the Midlands. I still use UK terms for things like tinned fruit here it is canned fruit but maybe that is the term used in the UK now. I still say apricot and tomato as I always have, as I said last week that in how my mind works. Mo

Mo, l know exactly what you mean after 50 yrs in Texas l still catch myself saying things like, tinned fruit ,tomato, bananas, torch to name a few all with a brummie accent,l volunteer at the local hospital on the reception desk, and its lively to see peoples faces when thay hear my accent, its always a conversation piece. later after l've thought of a few more words l'll let you know...Brenda

hi guys
i have heard over the years [ and i say you have as well ] that the americans
love the english accent, but one would say with a good educated voice
and a posh speaking one [like oxford or cambridge accent ] they love it
but how will they react when a rough speaking brummie comes over
with the broad brummie accent will they understand it even like it
will they still say i love your accent ?,
i have travelled the breath of this country and no matter i try
i cannot loose my aston brummie accent my dialogue is as if
i was born yesterday, so i don,t think they will say to me
i love your english accent i live in worcester .and half these
worcesterights cannot understand me ,they say i beg your pardon
and i have to repeat my sentence
so the yankies ain,t gonna understand me when i go over
best wishes astonian.;;;;;;;

so the yankies ain,t gonna understand me when i go over
They will but most of the ones I met (mainly in the South) thought I came from Australia. One other thing is the different understandings of words and sayings we use.
There is a title of a thread on here which would cause surprise in some states

My friend's over here from Canada. She and her parents emigrated there almost fifty years ago and they still say she's English. She's been here for just over a week and her Brummie accent is already starting to re-appear....by the time she leaves she'll be talking like a true native! This is what happened the last time she visited!
I have also been mistaken for Australian - in London of all places. Mind you. they talk funny there don't they?

Astonion, don't you believe it, when l first came here l was called all things but English, mostley German, French even a damn yankee....but times have changed since then as if you were'nt a Texan in Texas you were an outcast, but now the world has gotten so much bigger and like the uk we have a lot of mixed nationalities, so now peoples ears are more atuned to change......but this part of Texas if not all Texas, spanish next to english is the most spoken language....l've never been able to master spanish can'nt imagin spanish being speken with a brummie accent, my accent confuses enough people...Brenda

hi brenda

Astonian I love the Worcester Shropshire accents that is where our caravan is the site is divided one side Worcester the other Shropshire. I think there are more Brummies than locals these days living there. I don't think I will ever lose my accent and would not want to. Jean.

hi all
I love the brummie accent, and I remember my Uncle Horace he only ever talked in one sylable AH, you ok uncle h, Ah, auntie she ok Ah, pam and lyn AH,AH.But it reminds me that once in the middle of Turkey in a bus station, I had noticed this little blonde child playing in the main thourghfare, when above the hullabalu of the foreign voices I heared "get that babbie out the orse road,er's gunna get killed" I found out later the mom and dad came from stetchford.
regards
paul

The main reason for people hammering our dialect is ignorance. The Birmingham accent is confused with the Black Country one which is totally different. It is the Black Country one which people do not like.
When I was a lorry driver many years ago, people in other towns often asked where I was from. When I told them their reply would normally be "you do not sound like a Brummie".
My dad was from Aston, I was born in Acocks Green and I attended a normal infants, junior and Secondary modern school in Birmingham, I did not do special English lessons so I have always spoken just like a normal Birmingham person.
If you ever hear someone mimmick our accent, they always sound like a Tipton foundry worker from ninety years ago.

I went to a Birmingham Welsh thing with friends who unfortunately are Welsh(Well one was born in Stechford but still considers himself welsh). Hugh Edwards the Beeb news presenter was the speaker, lamenting about the class predjudice at the beeb against the Welsh and their accent and how he was told he could never present a programme with that accent.
When he asked for questions I asked him why in these enlightened times there were no brummy accents in any of the news/documentary progs. (this was 5 years ago). He rolled out the usual "Least popular accent" research, but admitted t"here was a fella called adrian chiles who will go far".
As a brummy I do not like my accent. I would get rid of it if I could, and I know ny career would have been improved without it. Having lived round the country, I notice it more. what is worse though is actors trying to "Do" Brummy. None of them get it right.
