Do you mean The Speedwell pub on the corner of Stockfield Rd/Wharfdale Rd?, next to it was Wilmott-Breedons car body parts factory, chrome bumpers, car locks, car handles etc, they had large well underneath the factory, the pub became a meeting place for bikers, got a bad reputation with fights between rival gangs and was closed down, demolished, and has a car showroom on the site.

Yeah, that sounds like the one.

I live in Acocks Green now and the place had been demolished before I moved here but I have been told by a few people that it was the roughest boozer around.

Full of biker gangs etc. I wasn't sure exactly where it was, I assumed Speedwell Road.

HI Beaglehole
Yes Arther Is Right Its Now A Vauxall Dealership Now
But Prior To That It Was A Very Large Pub, Indeed ,
And Yes Regular As Clock Work There Was Always Big Trouble There Most Nights, At One Time There Was A Gather, Whom Name I Cannot Recall
At This Moment In Time , Because This Gather Could Not ControlThe Problems
The Brewery Took Him Out The Police Closed It Down For A LONG Time
After The Trouble And Then The Brewery Appealed To Have It Openened Again They Put Restrictions On It And Regarding There Opening Times
The Guy Was Known To Us Locals And He Was A Big Bloke But Soft With It
And When They Finalised To Get It Open With in The Next Six Months
The Trouble Started Again With Alot Of The Local Riff Raff But He Put Payed To That He Got Some Dogs In , Then He Started To Get Afew Bikers Coming At Week Ends They Got Rowdy , And When The News Got About
Then The Hells Angells Came And Sorted Them Out And Chased Them Away
And After A Little While The Ageles Took Over Completely
And I Mean Completely One Friday Evening They Came And TIED The Gather Up
Drank The Pub Dry And Had A Bon fire In The Pub Grounds They Kept The Gather Tied To The Office Chair For The Whole Three Days And Then When Drank The Pub Completely Dry , Kegs , And Bottles They They LeftThe Bonfir Burning
And Completely Trashed The Pub,There Was About 69 BIKERS There For That Event The Sunday Morning The Fire Brigade Came And The Police To Find The Gather , No-one Was Ever Brought To Book For This
So The Police Said Enough Is Enough Tis Was In The Early Seventys
I Knew Some Of The Generals Of The Angells And i Myself Lived At
66 Speedwell Rd And I Have Also Run Some Of The Pubs Around B,ham
Afew Years Ago And Some Clubs Best Wishes ASTONIAN ,;;;

Thanks for all the info chaps.

Astonian, that's a great story, thanks very much for posting it.

The Speedwell was replaced by Elt Brothers Ltd (Vauxhall Dealership). Two brothers who ran a small family business from Deakins Road, Hay Mills in very cramped conditions. Our business dealt with them for years. once purchasing a Bedford Lorry from them.

I spent many years drinking in the pubs in that area, but I don't think I ever used the Speedwell. It didn't have a very good name before the bikers came on the scene and it was just one of a few pubs in the area that you didn't use if you wanted a quiet drink.

Thanks very much for photo, pmc, certainly looks a big place!

Alf, thanks for that invaluable link. Should I ever be in the market for any truck or automative components I will be certain to give them a call. ;)
