The Longboat, Cambrian Wharf

In 1977 Birmingham Polytechnic students living in Cambrian Hall would often drink there. It was The Longboat then.

was just thinking about the longboat and wondered if anyone has any updates on it...is it still open because on the website it says it is which would be good news considering it was meant to be demolished

Yes it's still going strong. I was a regular in the late 90's / 2000's and always loved the friendly vibe there and the music for me was spot on. It's well worth a visit to sit outside by the canal on a nice sunny day. I always spoke of wanting a flat in one of the towers that tower over the flapper.. never did happen though lol. I imagine they're worth a pretty penny.

Just read that they are planning to demolish The Longboat in Cambrian Wharf. I must admt that when I visited it last year it felt a little bit run down, but I always remember the summers I spent there, especially the long hot summer of 1976. Lump in the throat time!

List of pubs that have gone that I still remember...

Bogarts
The Windsor (the REAL one)
The Parisian
Cagney's
The Costermonger
The Pen and Wig
The White Swan (Edmund St)
The Church Inn / Cathedral Tavern
The Bier Keller (Needless Alley)
St. Paul's Tavern (Ludgate Hill)
The Golden Eagle (Hill St.)
The Parasol (Hill St.)
The Crown (Broad St.)
The Australian Bar (Hurst St.)
The White Lion (Bristol St.) (I loved Davenport's Continental Lager!)
The pub above the Bodega , opposite St. Chad's Cathedral
The Philibuster (! desperately tryning to relaim those dead brain cells!)
The Three Horse Shoes (Pershore Rd)
The Red Lion (Vicarage Rd.) (Still much the same, not many left!))
The Nelson (Top of Temple St. near the cathedral)
The Royal Mail (New St.)
Tavern in the Town (New St.)
The Old Contemptibles
The Horse Trader (Horsefair)
The Greyhound (Cider house, Bath Row)
The Glue Pot / Sam Weller's (John Bright St.)

Sorry for using up valuable space but I felt I had to try to remember while I still could!
From the day it opened I'm surprised that it's survived so long

well after my time of early 70s...the one song that we played over and over at the longboat was cher singing gypsies tramps and thieves 1971...its still one of my favourite all time songs...cant resist posting it:)

That is still a great song, appreciated by so many still! Cher was in Nashville (Music City) a few years ago and bought the house down with that song. Her voice a little weaker but adjusted with the newer audio technology.

Kingston Row near entrance of The Longboat...

Those properties became residential at some point.

When I was the DJ at the flapper I originally drove down the service road and loaded and unloaded through the side door of the pub and left my van there whilst I worked (it was a dead end apart from pedestrians).

All was well until the traffic wardens started to frequent on a regular basis and started hitting us with parking tickets.

The people who lived in those houses kindly gave me access through the barrier to park on their frontage each Friday & Saturday night, out of reach of the pesky traffic wardens!
