ROWLEY JACK

Brummie babby
I wonder if anyone remembers the above? My Dad was caretaker there in the late '60's to early 70's. I worked as assistant caretaker for a time. If anyone has photos of anything connected would be delighted to see them. Would especially like to see a photo of the old lodge, on the corner of Moor Green Lane and Russell Road, where we lived during this time.

Welcome Rowley Jack. Hopefully members will be able to turn up some information or images for you. Was the Society on or near Moor Green Lane ?

Viv.

In 1915 the offices were in Corporation Street, and in 1921 the 27th annual meeting was held. Making the founding date at least 1894.

Had a look around. It’s a listed building https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1393669

And here are a few images for starters. Viv.

1893 ties in with the founding.

MCCMXCIII is 1993?
It translates to 'founded 2093' how odd.

I presume everyone knows it's now the Scientology headquarters. Ominous.
This is from 2010 when it was up for sale.

I just love this kind of architect twang. I once read one describing the old Post Office on New Street, it was superb.

MCM = 1900 (1000+1000 -100) then add on on the 93 XCIII (100-10 +1+1+1) makes it 1993
M M C X C III
MCCM = 1800 (1000 + 1000-100-100) plus the 93 makes it 1893
M M C C
and these these were the guys who built straight roads, not the rambling roads that followed and still prevail in most of our countryside.

Wot do I know

Apologies to all who replied or responded to this thread. I have for the first time today (14th September 2019) received notification form the forum to the effect that there had been a response - i.e 5 months after my first starting thread!!!

it is always advisable to actually check in on the forum on a regular basis as the email thread alerts are not always reliable...
