In the late1950s there was still a gas lamp outside St Laurence Church in Northfield (presumably not functional by then) and just a little further on past the Great Stone Inn and the Northfield Pound (containing the Great Stone itself) a modern electric street light which I've superimposed in this image:
The electric street light is described as being " in pristine Birmingham maroon and cream.....a fine Revo 'Moseley' column surmounted by a Revo fuse box, swan-neck scrolled bracket and Revo C12422/AL 'step-top' lantern". Street lamps that never were?
In 1919 the Birmingham Civic Society held a competition for the design of street accessories. The best lamp designs were considered to be those of the Birmingham Guild and were offered to the Public Works Committee. However the report from the Civic Society wistfully concludes: "but despite their obvious superiority to the designs which they were intended to supersede, no use has so far [1946] been made of them" - and so probably never was. Nevertheless the winning design itself does survive:
