St Nicolas Church Lower Tower St Newtown

Hi, my first thread here.

I'm interested in any information concerning St Nicolas' Church in Newtown. I've only heard of the church in Kings Norton with this name but with my gt aunt living in New Summer St at time of marriage, I wondered if there was a church of that name in the Newtown area. I got round to asking Carl Chinn and he said that a church existed and it merged with St Georges/St Marys. However, I cannot find anything on it.???

I just received a Marriage Certificate with St Nicolas Church on was it in Newtown.

I don't want to look anything up just curious. My Mom's parents were married there 1910:)
 
I now know where it was. It was located on Lower Tower Street near to the junction with Ward Street.

Here is a snip from the British History site that in this one section lists all the churches in Birmingham by 1800.

ST. NICOLAS, Birmingham (Lower Tower St.), designed by Martin and Chamberlain and comprising chancel, nave, aisles, and baptistery, (fn. 62) was consecrated in 1868. (fn. 63) A parish was assigned to it out of St. Stephen's, Birmingham, in 1869, (fn. 64) when the living became a vicarage in the gift of the bishop. (fn. 65) In 1942 the benefice was united with that of St. Edward, Birmingham, to form the united benefice of St. Nicolas and St. Edward. (fn. 66) The church was closed in 1947 and subsequently demolished.
[ST. NICOLAS, King's Norton (Pershore Rd. South); see no. 18, and V.C.H. Worcs. iii. 187-90.]
[ST. NICOLAS with ST. EDWARD, Birmingham, was a united benefice created in 1942 by the union of the benefices of St. Nicolas, Birmingham, and St. Edward, Birmingham. This united benefice was in turn united with that of St. George, Birmingham, in 1949.]

hi steve...thanks for this info..i had no idea that there used to be a church in lower tower st and i wonder where about in the street it was situated as this is my neck o the woods..if i come accross any pics i will post them for you....

I have only just seen this post (been very busy!). I found a photo of St Nicholas, but only the interior, some years ago in Birmingham Library, it was for a lady in Australia and I did not keep a copy. It was from a Parish Magazine, and from what I can remember, it was the only existing photograph at the time. Now I know this is not much help, but at least it can point you in the right direction!

hi shortie..thanks eveso for that info as i too would like to see any pics..inside or outside of this church...if its at central library i will track it down next time i can get there..

When you do Lyn, if you post a pic, I can save it, you never know when it may be useful. It took a while to find it, I think it was discovered in a box, it's a copy of the parish magazine. I never thought I would need it, hence not saving it. Pity no exterior one exist, but you never know..................

It was the outside I was looking for - they told me it was the only pic they had - looking through the cards at the library it is the only one listed. I guess one coul dhave turned up, because this is about five years ago now. Do let us know just what you find!

shortie if it was about 5 years ago then its certainly worth another search as new pics are coming in all the time...

shortie ive had a reply from carl chinn and he has no pics at all of st nics so it looks like a central library job...will let you know how i get on....fingers crossed..
