I agree, 1950s I remember paddling across to the little island and getting “ blood suckers” on my legs.

Have loved reading all these memories of Sparkhill Park. Did the Park open and close every evening and did the Park Keeper live nearby? Was there ever a bowling green, or tennis courts? What was The Spider?

I went there regularly. Used to walk from Sarehole Road where it joins the Stratford Road. Probably early fifties and well before Hall Green Library came into existence. Dave.
Hi all, I lived in Showell Green Lane & the top half of the park was where all my activities took place. Football, Cricket, Headers, etc. The priest from English Martyrs Catholic Church sometimes joined in, as did the vicar from St Johns church, reverend Tetley. My time at the park would have begen from about 1946 to 1955 when I left school (St Johns & Formans Road). Used to enjoy time in the Dell, an area next to the Women'sHospital.

I did! I remember going to a birthday party party of a friend ( we went to St John’s school next door) whose parents were caretakers and lived in rooms in the library . It was so exciting being in the library when it was closed . Do I remember rightly that there was a huge staircase that led up to the Adult section? The children’s section was on the ground floor.
Did you go to Sparkhill swimming baths ( as they were called) They had individual baths as well that people could use if they didn’t have a bath at home .
I lived in Bromyard Rd and my house backed on to the allotments and the River Cole. My sister and her friend made a “raft” and tried to sail it on said river with disastrous results! She came home very wet
Another view of the bandstand. Beautiful lines to this bandstand. Can anyone work out which road(s) can be seen in the distance ? Would it be the rear of houses in Stratford Road, Oakwood Road/Park Road, Showell Green Lane or Court Road ?

I believe the photo is looking towards the Stratford Road .... with the tops of Hillfield Road and Clarence Road going away from the camera in the background. Note that the bandstand used to sit in the middle of a circular grassed area - as shown in the attached 1913 map - that was changed to an oval in later years.
Thanks all. So based on post #43, this must be the modern view. Red dot looks like the same buildings.
