Xpelair was my biggest customer in Birmingham when I joined my present company. We sold them tens of thousands of felt washers which were soaked in oil to lubricate the shafts of the electric motors used in their kitchen fans. One day I went in to see the buyer who told me that the company was closing and all production moving to Eastern Europe. He was totally shocked at this decision, and so was I - the first real indication I had of British manufacturing being moved out (sold out?) to third world countries. GEC Xpelair was always a good company to do business with, and it was clean, modern and efficient. I always enjoyed visiting, and getting a proper cup of coffee made with a cafetiere....

I haven't been down Witton for ages, so I wonder if the old Xpelair factory is still standing.

Henry's was in Union Street. If you went down Union St from Corporation
Street it was on the right hand side just after WH Smith's

Henrys was where wh smith is now, good old days

Do you know, I was having second thoughts about that, but I was
sure that Smith's was there at the same time as Henry's. I used to
go into Smith's from the entrance on the corner of the arcade at the
rear. Did they extend the shop after Henry's closed?

Re: Southalls Cricket Team

Hi there.

Worked at Southalls for nearly 40 years. Are you sure about the date of the photograph. The person sitting on the front row 1st left is I believe to be Bernard Whitehead. He was of similar age to myself starting as a lad in 1957. The person the front row last but one is Sid King, who I believe played in goal for Birmingham City during and just after the war.

On Google Earth Southalls is all there on the image dated Dec 2006. On the next image, dated Aug 2007, the half between opposite Foxton Road and Ludlow Road has been mostly demolished. It's the same on the next image, dated Dec 2010, but the following one, dated Sep 2011, it has been completely demolished.
