Xpelair was my biggest customer in Birmingham when I joined my present company. We sold them tens of thousands of felt washers which were soaked in oil to lubricate the shafts of the electric motors used in their kitchen fans. One day I went in to see the buyer who told me that the company was closing and all production moving to Eastern Europe. He was totally shocked at this decision, and so was I - the first real indication I had of British manufacturing being moved out (sold out?) to third world countries. GEC Xpelair was always a good company to do business with, and it was clean, modern and efficient. I always enjoyed visiting, and getting a proper cup of coffee made with a cafetiere....
I haven't been down Witton for ages, so I wonder if the old Xpelair factory is still standing.
