When we had sore throats as kids our Mum used to make us 'butter balls'- small balls of butter, dipped in vinegar and rolled in sugar.

I've no idea if this was a popular sore throat remedy in other families- Mum was originally from Dorset so it may be just a Dorset thing- or perhaps just one of our Mums crazy ideas to shut us up?? :idiot2:

My Mom was Welsh and her cure for a sore throat was Potatoe and Sulphur mixed together, put into an old stocking  ( I presume it was clean  :-[ ) and tied round the neck before we went to bed. What do they say "what don't kill you, will cure you " ;)

Our lodger Arthur used to say 'Eat Crisps' I wish I knew why it worked.

I swear by ........hot lemonade..............fresh lemons and honey...............and helpd wiv that tickly cough a treat

Dear Doctor
Having recently returned from an extended stay in one of the more remote areas of the Borneo jungle, where I spent several months observing the everyday lives of a previously undiscovered native tribe, might I tender to you their rather novel treatment for people with sore throats.
Any of their fellows who complains of having a sore throat is immediately suspended upside down by their ankles and their head lowered into an anthill, where they are kept for sixteen days or until their brains have been completely eaten by the ants, whichever comes first.

Whilst this is happening all of their posessions and their wives, for they are indeed a polygamous people, are shared out amongst their fellow tribesmen.

Now as alternative medicine goes you might think, at first reading, that this is a bit hard to swallow but from personal observation I can vouchsafe that it works admirably, for sore throats are almost unknown amongst these charming forest dwellers.

I hope that this information might be of some use to you in your quest for a cure for my pal Alf ;)

Boiled Lemons & VIC VIC & VIc just put it on my chest about 10 Mins ago and its smelling nice while I write :smitten:

Just a note about Asprin...............not to be used for juveniles with sore throats and if the solution is swallowed, make sure that you do not have a health problem that is contra indicated.

urrgh! After hearing some of your remedies, I think I was very lucky to get the butter balls!

VICs- I haven't used this since I was a child- I think that Vics, Vaseline and the dreaded TCP were the only things in our medicine cupboard- everything else came from the kitchen. I seem to remember bicarbonate of soda being a cure for everything- from wasp stings to cleaning your oven! Oh, and the cure for a tummy ache- dry toast??- needless to say we never had many tummy aches in our house.

I was given boiled water with salt in it: God, if you swallowed it! .........well your throat got sorer because you were .......SICK :( :o

A caution: Competing atletes (such as I) should steer clear of Vic inhalers - they show positive in dope tests and lose you your medals. :-\
