hi..hopefully someone can help you with the shop query... what year was beatrice born and did she marry and have children if so do you know their names as any extra info you have may helpTrying for information re my Great Aunt, Beatrice May Hawkes. Family notes say she had a "Sweets Shop" in Small Heath in 1916. Cannot find her in the 1921 census. Could the 121 Arthur St have been the shop? Any info would be appreciated.

may have found her on the 1921... year of birth and location of birth matches.... also living in the house is a frederick..martha and 3 others but you will need to purchase a copy to confirm the full names of others living in the house and the address...(she could be a lodger)Beatrice was born in 1884 at Brierley Hill and was a young school teacher there. We believe she may have lived with her mother Eliza Hawkes at 263 Charles Rd in Small Heath in1920s. Believe she was single in 1920-21 when she disappears.
Thanks for the really quick response, glad I found this site!

what year was that markFollowing on from Lyn's info...
Beatrice is living at 113 Bowyer Road, listed as a school teacher, a boarder of Frederick Sears. Also a boarder is her sister Norah.
oh right did not realise you could see that much info without payingThat's from the 1921 census.
thanks for that info mark...so can you confirm that the beatrice i found on the 1921 on post 4 is the one bob is looking forYou can't see it as such, it's a work around.
If you enter Beatrice's name, birth year and districts then you can use the * to find a few things out.
It can be slow but if you then put a* in the address box it'll say no results but you can you work your way through the alphabet until you get a result (luckily this time it was b*). Once you have the first letter move on to the next until you can work it out (luckily again was able to guess after bow*). Numbers the same. You can also just put road, street etc and get a result which helps.
After you find the address you can find other residents. You can also use the * in other boxes to find out occupation or relationship.
not sure jan...maybe bob can let us know where he got the number 121 from...i guess she could have moved further down the street....people did or maybe the shop was seperate from the houseI am puzzled. We seem to have her at 191 but the thread title suggests 121. Where did 121 come from?
Hi Mike, I just know this post is in the wrong section, but would you have a street map showing 8/20 Arthur Street Small Heath. My husbands mother was born there. The 1915and 1921 Kellys directory lists Miss Beatrice Hawkes as being a grocer at 191 Arthur St. It is a different owner in the 1913 and 1924 editions. The year is the publication date, and probably refers to the year before
Pauline. Unfortunately the old maps site is not now available for maps showing numbering of back houses. However I have worked out that no 20 was the house marked in red on the c1889 map below, and 8 back 20 would be one of the houses in blue
