Trying for information re my Great Aunt, Beatrice May Hawkes. Family notes say she had a "Sweets Shop" in Small Heath in 1916. Cannot find her in the 1921 census. Could the 121 Arthur St have been the shop? Any info would be appreciated.

Beatrice was born in 1884 at Brierley Hill and was a young school teacher there. We believe she may have lived with her mother Eliza Hawkes at 263 Charles Rd in Small Heath in1920s. Believe she was single in 1920-21 when she disappears.
Thanks for the really quick response, glad I found this site!

Following on from Lyn's info...

Beatrice is living at 113 Bowyer Road, listed as a school teacher, a boarder of Frederick Sears. Also a boarder is her sister Norah.

You can't see it as such, it's a work around.

If you enter Beatrice's name, birth year and districts then you can use the * to find a few things out.

It can be slow but if you then put a* in the address box it'll say no results but you can you work your way through the alphabet until you get a result (luckily this time it was b*). Once you have the first letter move on to the next until you can work it out (luckily again was able to guess after bow*). Numbers the same. You can also just put road, street etc and get a result which helps.

After you find the address you can find other residents. You can also use the * in other boxes to find out occupation or relationship.

The 1915and 1921 Kellys directory lists Miss Beatrice Hawkes as being a grocer at 191 Arthur St. It is a different owner in the 1913 and 1924 editions. The year is the publication date, and probably refers to the year before

The Beatrice Hawkes at 113 Bowyer Road in 1921 appears to be a Beatrice Mary Hawkes b1884 Brierley Hill (reg Stourbridge), the daughter of John Edward Hawkes and Eliza Green.

Beatrice's mother Eliza is living with another daughter (Annie) in Brierley Hil in 1921.

There is an Elizabeth Hawkes b1845 Bham (and others) listed at 263 Charles Road in 1921.

How or if this ties together I don't know or if is 2 different Beatrice Hawkes.

It is possible that the Beatrice Mary Hawkes from Brierley Hill 'married' a George Johnson. On 1930s ERs she appears to be at 35 Fulham Road but on 1939 register she seems to be listed as Beatrice Johnson.

thanks mark....it could be getting a tad confusing now so i will wait until bob reads all the above posts containing what info we have found so far...maybe he can tie it all in

oh ive just found an incoming passenger list for beatrices brother clifford...arriving at southampton from new canada 1916 address he gives is 191 arthur st small heath..occupation bricklayer

bob when you log on again go back to the last post you made and read from there...that way you will not miss any of the info we have found

I am puzzled. We seem to have her at 191 but the thread title suggests 121. Where did 121 come from?

Amazing! I learned more about my Hawkes family in the past 24 hours than I did in the past 5 years of searching!

Aunt Beatrice’s parents are indeed John Edward Hawkes and Eliza Green and both Clifford and Nora are two of her five siblings. Checking my family notes, the address IS 191 Arthur street.

Thanks so much for finding her. My other missing person is her father John Edward Hawkes who was a tailor in Brierley Hill until 1912 when he disappeared. I thought he may have been living with Beatrice in 1921 census but apparently not.

Thanks Again to All

Jessie, my Grandmother, immigrated to Canada with her family in September 1920. My aunt Ethel married Lawson Price in 1912. I am still sorting all the great information you found!

Hi Mike, I just know this post is in the wrong section, but would you have a street map showing 8/20 Arthur Street Small Heath. My husbands mother was born there.

Pauline. Unfortunately the old maps site is not now available for maps showing numbering of back houses. However I have worked out that no 20 was the house marked in red on the c1889 map below, and 8 back 20 would be one of the houses in blue
