Six Ways Aston

this is a cracking photo..st sign on the left says alma st so its on the corner of alma and high st..shop decorated for a royal celebration looks like it says ER ..now compere it with the photo on post 9...note the corner brickwork of the shop on the right corner. and the corner brickwork on this photo..i would say they are the same shops taken at different years..

didnt they just john...looking again it looks as thought the royal decorations continued round the corner and the property to the right...having said that all of that could have been owned by matthews the grocers

This was somewhere near Six Ways, Aston. Is this possibly dated c1911 with decorations for King George's Coronation ? But I did wonder why there was a Fire Hydrant ("FH" ) beneath the right- hand window -:were FH's around in c1911? There's an image of a king and queen inside the decorative medal/plaque between "Grocery" and "Stores" sign.

Another wonderful shop with, doubtless, some of the Matthews family members posing in the photo. Lots of bacon piled in the window, ready for slicing and an impressive mountain of tinned produce on display.

There's some sort of notice board (?) or display unit on the left corner of the shop. Can't work out what's inside. Looks like numbers but can't make sense of it.

There's a Walter Matthews listed as Grocer and Provision Merchant in 1911 at 2 Lozells Road I think. His wife was much older and one of her sons (from a previous marriage) is with them listed as Grocers Assistant.

the building looks familar to me viv...maybe corner of lozells road and alma st..i think we discussed this building before (its the brickwork design on the left that i remember ) maybe on the 6 ways thread will go and look

Yes Viv they did have hydrants. they were shown in early maps. The map below shows one outside 2 Lozells Road as an H.

There are many photos of Six Ways and many of them show the Midland Bank on the corner of Lozells Rd & Birchfield Rd. Some of those photos show the large house to the rear of this Bank. This house was Bromfield House and I am intrigued as to why the bank was built on the their drive. Can any members give any information on the history of Bromfield House? Who lived there, when was it demolished etc. I can't find anything online or on any Birmingham history websites. I've made this comparison photo showing what Six Ways would have looked like if the bank had not been built. I hope the image is acceptable, but delete if not.Bromfield House with text.jpg

Bromford House is mentioned frequently in newspaper adverts. It's address is given as Bromford House Six Ways (either as Lozells or Birchfield). I could find no articles citing Bromfield House Six Ways and cannot find anything for Bromfield House on an Internet search.

I shall create a new thread for Bromford House Six Ways Lozells Birchfield. Maybe someone else can turn up something on Bromfield House Six Ways (as per the map title).
