She played her face

Does anyone remember their relatives using the phrase "she played her face" which meant she dug her heels in and became awkward about a situation? I remember my Nan using this phrase and I use it myself but I think it's a rare one.
I certainly do, exactly in the context you describe. It’s a phrase I still use.

I’m sure I used the phrase myself when my children were young way way back.
I’m still 25 in the head, but 78 arrives shortly after LOL
