Does anyone remember their relatives using the phrase "she played her face" which meant she dug her heels in and became awkward about a situation? I remember my Nan using this phrase and I use it myself but I think it's a rare one.

I certainly do, exactly in the context you describe. It’s a phrase I still use.

I’m sure I used the phrase myself when my children were young way way back.
I’m still 25 in the head, but 78 arrives shortly after LOL

same here diane still 18 in the head lol...but yes i still use the saying played her/his face usually said about the grandchildren now
