sea food

Gone but not forgotten R.I.P.
Went out last night to a club and a man came round selling sea food in a basket. Now I have'nt seen this for years, I forgot all about it to be honest. Does anyone remember when they use to come round the pubs and clubs? Also remember when someone used to come round selling roses? A lot of guys were that drunk they used to buy one and then forget to take them home to their wives/girlfriends.

Certainly do remember, certainly commonplace up to late 1970s but its one of those things you don't realise has gone till someone mentions it. Rose man always seemed to turn up late in the session. I wonder why !

Certainly do Hanco it was (Kershaw Sea Foods) and the man who used to come to the Nechells area 30 years ago up until 3 years ago to moving down here, the very same man came to my local at the time The Gravediggers.
Years ago his daughter went on his rounds with him,and one time some scum robbed him,and after that she never went on his rounds with him
Incidentally it was outside TheAshted Hamlet i wonder if Kandor can remember that......do you Les:(Mossy

My husband worked for ansells and we often took the childre to their club. Couldn't wait for the cockle and welk man to come round. He had a strap round his neck attached to a basket full of these delicious sea foods. Love jellied eels. Costco sell this sort of stuff and Brian the watch had loads at his 65th birthday. Working in the market they did him a good deal. Jean.

Sheldonheath Social Club, Brays Rd, a Seafood seller visits with his whicker basket over his arm selling cockles, whelks, crabsticks etc on a regular route.

I wonder if its the same chap that came to the club? late 50s early 60s grey hair? Looks as if he has been doing it a long time. Incidentally, the club I went to was the new Banbury Club in Chelmsley Wood. Very nice place too. Went to a domino presentation, and a good night was had by everyone.

Hanco. My Pete's into darts and domino's. Plays for the New Inn Arley.. Came second in doubles domi's two years ago in the Highly league. Do you still play now?. Jean.

Yes, once a week in the Castle Bromwich club league, it's the only night I bother going out these days. Besides, all domino players are getting on so I don't feel out of place, they are all as grumpy as me.

A chap goes round the Lad in the Lane ( The old Green Man) every Sunday The same man has been doing it for Donkey's years, and the roses.

Hanco, which Pub do you play for only my son lives in Castle Bromwich. In the Highly league there are quite a few younger [teeneage] players. Mind you they havn't much else to do and they tend to followin in their fathers footsteps. It's the big event of the week. Every night apart from weekends there's some league or other on. The Tuesday one goes as far as the other side of the Clee Hill. Try it in the winter. Not much fun down them country lanes. Great when you get there a lovely log fire to welcome you. Jean.

Hi Wales
I was born in Park Rd and lived there, right opposite Whitmore St till I was 11 years old. Went to All Saints school, would have gone to Icknield St but moved before I was able to go.
