Remember my mom used to say when us kids came in from playing "you look manky" get yourself cleaned up, this was usually teatime and you came home starved after being out all day, something to eat then out again until dark. And when playing someone say whos got the pill (meaning ball) not sure where that came from, also remember stingers (stinging nettles) and there always seemed to be dock leaves near by so you could rub the sting and makeit feel a bit easier.
I was always getting in to trouble as one of the lads would make a trolley from old pram wheels and a plank, about 4 of us would jump on going down hill without brakes so you would put your feet out to stop the thing seriously damaging your shoes (soles and fronts) in the process, usually they were those plastic shoes from woolies, cant remember what they were called.

Steve, I think manky came from mange(sp) which was usually a diseased animal, dog or fox. The fur would be blotchy and messy. You looked (like many of us) messy or dirty.
