Sausages just ain't what they used to be.

M&S also do nice sausages with a high meat content(98%). These are the only ones I buy these days.

My list of must try's gets longer and longer. Going to give Walter Smith's another go but have learned not to buy them on Monday as they never taste as fresh. Thanks Charlie. Jean.

Have to join in with this thread because the best sausage Ive had in years, is available in all the shops up here, and that is Square sausage, or Lorne sausage as it is known. No matter where you buy it from, it all tastes tremendous. In fact, as its now lunch-time, Im off to make some. See you later, and thanks for the thought of suggestion. Barry.

Thanks Astonian
In almost 22 years living here I have not found a decent sausage they een got a Real Sausage shop just outside Felixstowe and the first and last time I got some I threw them in the bin after one mouthful and thats the truth

I know it is not a sausage but I have just had what must be the poorest pork pie I have had for a long time. Bought from my local family butcher (a lovely term that as if anyone would take their family there to be butchered). Looked good but tasted of stale sawdust with added pepper. How I look forward to my next visit to Melton Mowbray to get a proper one.

I complained to my butcher that his sausages had pork at one end and sawdust at the other end. His excuse was that it was difficult in these days of recession to make both ends meat! :-)

We don't complain enough now but I still do.

good morning icarus
you have just had me in stiches reading your
thread about your pork pie
when you said what the butchers reply was'
i nearly fell out of my arm chair with laughter
if you want a half decent pork pie
buy a pork farm one and a sausage roll
i do not recomend the 3 cooks either
nor our gregorgy they are all pink
process meat '
now i have just pulled myself together i am gonna make a cuppa to recoup myself from the laughter of your
thread , have a nice day best wishes

Astonian, I check to see if pork pies are made with cured or uncured pork the cured pork gives a pink pie pork, the uncured pork gives a grey pie pork filling as it should be just like Melton Mowbray pies, i never buy cured pork pies, the are rubbish, Cheers Len.

I can also recommend " Black Farmer" sausages/bacon products. " Duchy" sausages are also fine as is good old M & S sausages.....but they have to be served with a buttery mash made with king Edward potatoes !!!!

Margaret.

Going to do the sausage rolls in the morning and have bought some Richmond sausages and will let you know how many out of ten Pete gives them. My I have a right old list to get through for him. Has anyone seen the Norfolk turkey sausages only I have tried everywhere to buy them with no joy. They do still do other turkey products so it can't be due to the outbreak of bird flue on their farm. Jean.

Now I know this is going to cause uproar but.... for the first time in years, and in desperation because I was starving I visited a McDonalds for breakfast. The scrambled eggs were disgusting, the fried potato was like an inedible pork scratching... but the sausage was absolutely delicious, the best I have ever tasted. It was square and if they ever put that recipe in butchers links I for one would never buy elsewhere.

That's interesting John. I have never been to McDonalds but the grandchildren to now and again but normally have a burger. Will tell them to try the sausage. Wonder if their round sausages are the same recipe. Jean?.

Has anyone been watching the series of 'Rubbish British Food' documentaries on BBC2? I've only seen the first one so far, on meat products. Enough to turn anyone off meat for life! Last week's was about dairy products and this week covers fish.

I used to like the Irish recipe sausage but even that went downhill so I don't bother buying sausage anymore.

On reflection it may have been round, the excesses of the night before can have effects on your memory bless. It was however delicious Jean.

Hi Bernie

You never know. I was always amused by the undertakers in Coleshill High Street being next door to a 'Family butcher'

Kind regards

Dave

quite true Barry the best I ever had was from a butcher in Cambuslang love the taste no matter where in Glasgow

Just picked this thread up and Jean, answer to your question the pork butchers on the witton was called Browns and they made lovely little round steak and kidney pies.
My mom told me once that the red colouring in food in her day was cochineal, her aunt who had a cafe used to put it in the pink salmon to pass it off as red, only trouble was it was a give away as it stained the bread. I am at Kinver for the week and they have 2 lovely butchers in the village all home made food yummy and they do all sorts of sausages, venison ones are delicious. Guest butchers on the Stourbridge rd are good, they have won several titles of best sausage of the year.

Thanks Patty of course it was Browns. The Beacon farm butcher do the venison sausages and burgers but I am not at all keen. Maybe he showed me the animal hanging still with it's fur coat on. Our farmer friend Bill gets us the saddle of venison for half what we would pay up the Beacon. Have a good week Patty and hope you manage to find a good sausage while you are there. The Richmond I put in the sausage rolls Pete gave a nine for but says that's where they belong inside the pastry. Jean.

Not much help but you can get square sausage and other Scottish food delights in Corby due to the high Scottish contingent living there.

hi all
cannot remember the name but our local butcher in Bartley Green made his own sausages, they were fantastic and my dad called them "Snorkers".
paul

Hi Jean, did you get round to try the Coop sausages, I found their Irish ones very nice, Paul likes bangers and mash, or sometimes if the pork chops arent very big I put him a few sausages to make up, he used to bring me
some M+S food at one time, he says that now, like everyone else they
put them out at reduced prices. Hes having problems with his wrist and has been to the doctors with, bye Bernard

Lorne square sausage can bought at Farmfoods Discount stores, and they sell full cream milk £1 for 2litres, cheapest in Brum i think?. Len.

Maurice Ha Ha. Len I used them last year for sausage rolls. When defrosted made them into rounds. Mossy go back to the start of the thread if you want a laugh. Not intended of course. Bernard they are on my list for the next time we go to the co op. I wished I had taken photo's of my sausage making attempts as I don't remember one resembling a sausage. TTFN. Jean.
