Salford Bridge

Frothblower

Lubrication In Moderation
Riding on my new Mountain Bike to work, "trying" to get fit for my holidays. I noticed this plaque on Salford Bridge,I must have crossed this Bridge thousands of times, and I never noticed it.
It makes interesting reading.
Sorry about the picture quality, it's done with my phone.

There must be a lot of historical information on our bridges. I took this last week on the bridge on Stratford Road which crosses the River Cole at Sparkhill!

Is that where they did speed cycling Frothy. I remember my brother and his mate going somewhere there and it later became a go cart track. [I think]. Jean.

I thought you was having a knock at my cycling then.
The cycle track was over the road. Don't know about Go carting though.

Hi Frothie,
Hope you dont mind but here is a clearer version of your picture (when enlarged). Very interesting! I wonder how many times it has been read since mounted? It will certainly get read a lot more now, thanks to your keen eye.

Here's a photo of me breaking the national 10 mile, 25 mile and 1 hour records, one Monday evening in 1966 at sunny Salford Park. Sorry for the poor quality.

Thanks for the photo Cadaeu I was begining to doubt my memory. My brothers friend Ricky used to speed cycle. The bikes had no breaks didn't they. He would have ridden in the fifties and I recolect they had a track erected at one of the big sports days. It may have been the IMI. Oh Frothy would I take the Micky out of you cycling?. Alf maybe or Langy. Jean.

Does anyone remember the sandstone caves on Tyburn Road?
Any memories would be appreciated, and a picture would be great.

Moss.

Salford Bridge and the park hold a lot of memories for me. Living not far from there down the Slade Road, it was our old stomping ground. Cadeau. I had an Uncle who used to have a lot to do with the cycling years ago, but may have been before your time. His name was Bill McCormick. He lost his sight eventually though, which was quite a blow for him.
Great pictures all of you.
Lynda

Theres also a picture or Drawing of the Track Cadeau

Alf sorry that I missed this message last year but I was on holiday and only picked it up today! Graham.

Ah thats why Frothy bought his new Mountain bike, so he could ride up and over that. Thanks Naje. By the way I'm driving our old Birmingham Standard bus (3225) to a bus do at Bewdley Station on the SVR on Sunday if you are over that way.

Lynda,

I knew your uncle Bill very very well and in the photo that I posted he is standing there in the middle of the track, the one with his hands in his pockets. He was then chairman of the British Cycling Federation (BCF) racing committee, a very important position.

He stood with me on the start line of my world championship win in 1967 and I asked him if the BCF would pay for my trip to take part in the 6 day London cycle race later that year. He replied "if you get in the first 3 today (world road championship) I'll lend you the money" I replied "and what if I win today?" he said "then I'll pay for your trip out of my own pocket!". I won that day and asked Bill "where is my ticket to London?" and do you know what he replied? "You're richer than I am now". You could have knocked me down with a feather! I never held it against him but I did hold a grudge against the BCF because they thought it was quite normal that I won. 43 years later and they're still waiting for another British bloke to win this race even though, at a cost of millions of Lotto money, they've set up a training camp in Italy. In my day they, the BCF, wouldn't even lend me £50 to get to London.

I know all about Bill's eyesight going, that was very sad and I'll always remember him as a very nice man. And BTW that hour record that I set up at Salford park in 1966, my BCF record diploma bears Bill's signature, when I have time I'll give it a scan for you.

Graham.

Lynda, here is that certificate with your uncle Bill's signature. Sorry that it's a bit tatty but it has been in a few wars and a fire! Graham.

Thank you for that Cadeau. Fancy saying that to you though. It shows you how we shouldn't say things we really don't mean. He was a nice man though. Mom and he were very close, and she looked after him after his wife died. My sisters son, Mark Lines is very much into cycling, and has raced on the continent. It's almost as if its in the genes. I noticed you also have lived in Luxembourg? (I've been viewing alot of the different posts you have contributed to over the years) I also have a son who has lived in Luxembourg for the last 15 years, and we are going over next month for a wedding.
Thanks again for your reply.
Best wishes
Lynda

Lynda, And what a lovely warm Brummie accent he had, I can hear him now, his voice is one of the very few that I can remember from the 60's.

If you click on this link https://new.britishcycling.org.uk/50th-anni/article/bc-50-Years-Of-British-Cycling-News-The-60s you will see that British Cycling is celebrating its 50 anniversary and if you look at the text for 1959, just under my photo, you will read that your uncle Bill was there from day one! So he is not forgotten in British cycling.

Graham.

Lynda, on the British Cycling website celebrating their 50th anniversary they are asking for memories from the past and I have posted them some of my memories of your uncle Bill. I will notify you if they publish my mail.

Graham.

Graham. Thank you so much for that. Mom would have been so thrilled too. I am going to pass it on to some more of my family, who I know will be as proud as I am.

Hi all.Did anyone reply to the question of the caves. I used to live along Gravelly Hill, where were the caves?

I can remember spaghetti junction being built. I was out with a boyfriend and he nearly went into the big hole that had been dug to make a roundabout, because the last time he had come along that road it was straight!

Suze,
Turning into Tyburn Road off the Salford circus island, the caves were on your immediate left, sort of between Tyburn Road and the bottom of Minstead Road.
Moss.

Hi Moss,

Isn't there still a sandy embankment almost like a quarry behind Arthur
Turnbull's Transport (are they still there?). Were the caves in this bit
or further along?

Kind regards

Dave

Hi Just had a quick look on Google earth.I couldnt see any sign of anything that could have been a cave, just looked like gardens to me. Were they between the two sets of houses?
Any photos of Salford Bridge before it was demolished. There used to be shops there I seem to remember when I was on the bus going to work....centuries ago!
