This will test your memories, what was the former name of The Safe Harbour Moor Lane Witton? there is a clue in the address.:D

John I always heard it called the Diggers as the grave diggers popped in there for a pint [or two] but guess that was just a nick name. Jean.

Hi Jean, yes that was one of the nicknames but keep trying how, are the Smith brothers?
Regards John.

HUUUUUM John you don't know them do you?. Send me an IM as you have got me guessing now. Pete can't think of another name for that pub and he was on the Drays for a while. Jean.

Well done Chocs2 smack on. Give yourself a gold Blue Peter Badge.

John have you got the right pub only the Witton Hotel is on Witton Island. Have to ask Astonian as he is the expert. Jean.

Yes Jean i have spoke to you before we all went to the same Boys Club and played football for the club. I saw Dessy Addams a while ago in Asda and also visited The Old Oscott W.M.C. last Monday but did not see anyone i knew, i thought the lads played snooker there?

John are there not two on Witton Island and one has changed it's name. Jennyann brought this up on another thread so will pick her brain when she is on later. John I will have to stop talking to strange men if I can't even remember them. Jean.

Witton Arms now named The Cap and Gown is at 458 Witton Road. Right next to the the old Co-op store. The Outer Circle going in the direction of Erdington has a bus stop close by. The new gargantuan TESCO store is just along the road.

The Aston Hotel is the other long time pub in Witton. It has always fascinated me that there were no pubs along Witton Road
coming down from Six Ways down to Witton Island.I know there was a Working Man's Club on the left hand side up near Six Ways
but can't remember any others. Can anyone else?

There was one on the corner of Mansfield Rd. Cant think of the name of it off hand

Jennyann would the Guild Hotel come into the Witton road address. It was just down from where Pete lived. Thanks for the name of the pub I remember you mentioned it in a thread before. Pete said his friend Tony Heaney lived next door to the working mens club and of course the Albert Hall dance hall but I am going off thread a bit. TTFN. Jean.

Jennyann that is where Pete's dad would go for his guinness and a game of snooker. I am not sure if it is still there. Jean.

I'm sure the Safe Harbour was on the Forum before,:)

Dad used it we lived in The Ridgeway I would meet him and his mates every Sunday

Alf I am sure you are correct as I posted photo's on it but can't remember the title of the thread. Jean.

Hi Jean: Don't think the Guild is there these days. If you type Safe Harbour in the Forum Search Engine there is lots of info about it
in the threads.

Alf I am sure you are correct as I posted photo's on it but can't remember the title of the thread. Jean.

Hey Jean, I just read this:
SNUG MEMBERS PLEASE READ AND BE AWARE OF THIS NOTICE. AS ADVISED BY OUR SERVER ANY POSTS OLDER THAN 2 WEEKS WILL BE DELETED.
do you think that is why you can't find the thread? Nice to hear from you earlier today. Take care. :) Mo

Hi Sakura:

It's only threads that are in the Snug area that will be deleted after two weeks not the threads in the Main Forum.

If anyone wishes to look at the Guild on Google type in 51 Witton road and it is there as plane as day. Jean.

the safe harber was called the grave diggers arms, the guild on witton road on the left hand side going up towards six ways aston was an atkinsons house, hope this helps kind reguards sidwho

As well as the Diggers I think many also called it the ‘Widows”.

In 1870 the Witton Hotel and 12 cottages came up for sale… Pleasantly situated opposite the entrance to Witton Cemetery. The Hotel has a commanding and elegant appearance. The premises are very convenient, and the internal arrangements are most complete, and commensurate with the requirements of an extensive and respectable business, with carriage house and stabling, and a large garden….also 12 well-built cottages.
