Does anyone have any info on either the rest and be thankful pub on cooksey lane, kingstanding (now the sportsmans rest) or the golden hind oub on kingstanding road.

my dad (David Hart) would have played darts for them during the 50's, 60's 70's

Teh. You aint gonna believe it but we went there today for my birthday treat [Golden Hind] Not the poshest of pubs but it has just been refurbished. Mind you the food is the best value around. You have to wait while they cook it [not nuked] and if you want mash and veg they will do it for you. [Not smash] Will ask if they have any records of darts teams from the past. On my last glass of birthday wine. GGJ.

Re: Golden Hind

Glad to see the Golden Hind is still doing well. I went in once last year, and once about ten years ago, and was quite impressed both times. It is so nice to see people making a success of running a pub - not many seem to have that talent today.

teh

I cannot tell you anything of these two pubs, wrong end of Birmingham for me I'm afraid, but I have these two photo's as they would have been when your father used them.

Thanks PMC1947, the photos can go into my memories book. It was very kind of you to post the photos.

Teh, The next time we visit the Golden Hind we will ask if they have any records of the old darts teams. Wouldn't go in the other now if I was dying of thirst. Oh how it has changed. GGJ.

Teh,Johnny Murphy had the Hind about 20 years ago he left the Hind to take over the Mount when it was completely rebuilt,he went to the Hind after having The Ashted Hamlet for about 6 years he always kept a good pint

Mossy, do you know who had the hind before him. My dad worked there in the 70's aswell as playing for their darts team.

Teh sorry i dont know, because the first time i went in the Hind was when Johnny had it some one on here should know,my brother lives in Dyas Rd he used all the pubs in that area, but he cant remember The Gee Gee Jean i think might know:)Mossy

Mossy, thanks anyway.

If anyone can give me any info on these pubs preferably the 60's for the Rest and be thankful and the 70's for the Golden Hind.

Hello Teh, i was born in Kings Rd, Kingstanding, and the Rest and be Thankful was one of my Locals. We started a football team for the rest in which i played in the late 60's. The managers name was Bob Whitehouse. We were pretty succsessful winning the division we played in, and next year when we moved up winning that one too. Your dads name rings a bell with me. By the way the Licencees name was Jack Breeze.

Mike now in Sydney Australia

Teh sorry we have only been using it for a couple of years. [The Golden Hind] What exactly would you like to know about the rest and be thankful only my husband used to be a drayman and still has friends in the trade. Bye. Jean.

Hello Mike2167

What league did you play in:)

I played darts for the Safe Harbour Moor Lane Witton in the 50s and 60s and remember the Golden Hind darts team they won most things then as they had some Argus throwers playing for them. I can remember only beating them once in all those years.

John do a search for The Safe Harbour Witton and you will find lots of interesting posts on there. My husban used it a lot when he was on the drays for Ansells. Jean.
