Hello everyone.
Newbie here.
My name is Geoff and I joined this forum yesterday hopefully to help broaden my limited knowledge of Birmingham, and its environs, from the early 1800’s.
My GGGGrandfather Benjamin Jeffery was born circa 1788/1789. (Exact location currently unknown).
He married Mary Hipkiss in 1818, in the Parish of St. Philip, Birmingham.
From his marriage onwards Benjamin (a Miller, pre marriage trade), and his spouse Mary, resided in Summer Lane, Birmingham.
From 1818 up to 1825 Benjamins' occupation was stated as a Grocer, (numerous Baptism Records - all residing Summer Lane).
In 1830 Benjamin was listed in a Warwickshire Trade Directory as a Shopkeeper (No.9 Summer Lane).
In 1835 Benjamin was listed in a Birmingham Trade Directory as a Provision Dealer (Summer lane).
Now the interesting bit....
In 1838 an article titled "The Court For Relief Of Insolvent Debtors" published in "The Birmingham Journal" shows that Benjamin, "late of No.s 9 & 10 Summer Lane, Grocer and Chandler's Shopkeeper" was a held as a prisoner in the Fleet Prison, in the city of London.
However, in 1839 Benjamin is once again listed as a "Shopkeeper (No.9 Summer Lane)".
Sadly Benjamin died in 1840, (aged 51 yrs.), at No.9 Summer Lane. His occupation stated as Provision Dealer.
I am hoping that any Forum member(s) can shed any further light on "No.9/10 Summer Lane", its probable location along Summer Lane, and also if any images/maps could possibly exist of the building(s) at this address, or in close proximity.
Hope this isn't asking to much for my first post. Apologies if it is, and in any case many thanks for taking the time to read my post.
