I have had some more really good luck today.

Yesterday I was about to post a thread asking for advice on what to do next as I was trying to find out the names of my Dads 3 half brothers. I only had a name for 1 of them - Aurthur William Reeves born 16/02/1904 and I wondered how on earth I was going to find out their names with only knowing their parents names - Thomas William Reeves and Kate Reeves nee Weston.

Anyway - my cousin has sent another email today with their names as found on a piece of paper to do with our grandads will. I have years of death too and have found all but Joseph.

Joseph would have had to have been born between 1901 and 1917 - probably around the same time as his brother Arthur and probably in Aston although I cannot be sure as the family were in Aston in 1903 but Ladywood definately by 1917(thats when kate died). My cousin says -

Joseph (joe) died in 1958/9 and lived in the Harbourne area of Birmingham he died fairly young from Lung Cancer and had one son David who would be now In his early 60’s

I cannot find Joseph in the death index - trouble is he might have had another first name with Joseph being his middle name. I have searched 1957-1960 very thoroughly with no luck.

What district would Harborne (I presume no U?) come under around that time?

Any other ideas?

Thanks
Gobby

I had a good day today - I decided to have a look at how many Reeves there were in the online phone book for Birmingham (just found it) - I decided to have a look with the initial M to see how many M Reeves there were to match my initial. The address at the top of the list was one at 65 Bolney Road - this address rang a bell with me and I went back and looked at a death certificate that I received a few weeks back for one of Dads half brothers - Arthur William who died in 1975 - his wifes address was given as 65 Bolney Road on the certificate so I decided (eventually) to pluck up the courage and ring the number.

The lady at the address confirmed that her husband - Michael Reeves- was the son of Arthur William and would I like to speak to him.

WOW

Michael was a bit sceptical at first (who wouldnt) and said that other people had phoned him saying they were related but then could not answer questions about the family - Michael was gobsmacked and said it was the first time somebody had phoned and new more then he did.

So thanks to a tip from this fantastic website I have found - and spoken to - a cousin that I never knew existed. Michael has an older brother called Raymond - so thats 2 cousins! He was quite amazed when I told him I had visited his brothers WW2 grave (Arthur Edwin) in Holland as he had never been.

We talked for quite a while and they will be able to help me with other details from that side of the family to help fill in the gaps. We have exchanged phone numbers got each others email address - we have also agreed to meet sometime soon and we were both over the moon - and totally gobsmacked - to have spoken to each other this morning. We have a lot of catching up to do and I will let you all know when we meet and how we get on. I have had a big grin on my face all day :D

The link to the BT Phonenook is below - hope thats ok.

Thanks

I know this is a long shot but my maiden name was Reeves. My father was William Arthur Samuel Reeves from London but his family were originally from Ledbury and Eastnor in Herefordshire. His father was born in London but moved briefly to Birmingham when he was discharged from the army in 1904. I can find no reason why he would have moved to Birmingham and wonder whether he had family there - not immediate family as I have found them, but extended family perhaps. Does any of your family come originally from Herefordshire? Fingers crossed

Barbara
