Pubs Of The Past

They are very good photos Oldun, and , even if they are duplicates, that does not matter. But would help members if some indication was given as to their position, particularly where there are several pubs with the same name

Pub Pic’s.To the Moderator.I know there are a lot of pub pic’s out there but I have a few and thought the odd one may not have been seen or could even be what someone has been looking for.Anyway I leave it to your discretion whether they should stay or go.Should you give the thumbs up I will put a few more on.

Hockley/Newtown Area.

Hi Oldun; super photos! I can (just...) remember a few of these! Than you for posting them. Please post more!!!
If you have a printer/scanner, you should be able to scan these in on the scanner - this will give a much higher resolution and will also scan them flat, allowing more of the wonderful detail in the photos to be seen.

The unlabelled one at 47 Stour st is described as below in the 1901 census, but cannot work out what the name of the beerhouse was


Could it be Red lion??

It did seem a bit odd. In Kelly's it is a beerhouse.

It looks like a licence for off sales was applied for in 1877, and the off licence was transferred in 1895, so it looks like it was an off licence,despite the peculiar description as a beerhouse

It looks like an offie in the pic. It was M&B in the Edwardian period. The 1906 rate book shows no name - generally they did enter the house name. By the way, in earlier times No.42 was the Telegraph.

Kelsey's didn't have too many pubs in Birmingham, the Trees on Bath Row probably the most notable. This house in Heneage Street was the Shepherd and Shepherdess.

The photograph of the Plough and Harrow on Moseley Road is interesting, it seems unusual to have a single storey pub like that.
I noticed it was next to the Alhambra cinema which closed in 1968 and found this old photo - no pub next door when this was taken.

Interesting-I don’t have a date for this but the Belgrave was 1967 and I would have thought this is about the same.I shall have to go back to these and put dates on where I can.Why I didn’t do that I don’t know. Looking at the house to the left I find it hard to tie up the windows in the two photos and of course how can it be on a later photo,if that is the case ?

Yes it's odd isn't it - I wasn't being critical of the information you had posted!

I think it is the angle the photograph was taken from that JUST misses out the pub. The 1957 one is full on , and shows the gap to the left of the air raid shelter (?) on the far left, which you do not see on the photo from an angle. Certainly, The Plough & Harrow is listed there in the 1956 Kellys and up to the 1969 edition (which can be taken to refer to 1968. It has disappeared from listings in the 1970 edition, though that does not mean the building itself was not still extant. The initial phot from Oldun to me looks as if it might not still be used as an actual pub, as the board giving licensee's name etc seems to have gone

I found it slightly amusing to see that the electoral rolls for 1925 and 1927 describe it as The Plough & Harrow Hotel - by present understandings perhaps slight delusions of grandeur.

According to Streetview the site is now part of Calthorpe academy (or possibly partly the road outside), and has been since at least 2008

Just back.Re your 8.13 pm post,A Sparks-I wouldn’t take you wrong.I appreciate your observations and I remain grateful for your help not long after I started.I was going to suggest more photographic evidence but I see that thanks to yourself and Mike
things have come on a pace.I agree same cinema,good photo,and further info/observations all interesting.Great stuff.

The photograph posted by Oldun was taken on June 11th 1969 - I know because I have the original negative plate. The pub closed for trading on 27th July 1969.
