Thank you very much, I came across a document for Pearl Assurance taken out for my mother at the age of 3.
She lived at court 10 in Stoke Street.

on the map below i can see court 7 and 8 marked out it could be that court 9 was behind no 34 and courts 10 and 11 behind the builders yard...ladywood2 do you have a house number for court 10..link below to the map..just move the blue dot to the left to see what is there now

The adress is 2 court 10, and the assurance company is the Refuge, the premium was one penny

I've found a later Refuge Assurance Company for my mother aged 11 for 10 pounds and 7 pence in 1918. Both parents died of influenza in 1918 and my mother became an orphan.

thats odd then as i cant see a house no 2 in what i thought could be court 10..maybe if mike spots this post he can help sort it out..so many died of influenza very sad

My mother Elizabeth Ann Powell, her father was Edward Powell, and her mother Ellen Powell.

nellie powell 36 (nelly could be another name for ellen)

daughter liley 3..(liley being short for elizabeth)

Interesting, William [Billy] Killed in Salonika 1918, James [Jimmy] Killed in France 1917 don't know of John and Kellie, Elizabeth or Lily seems correct.

did your mom ever say who looked after her after her parents both died..ie did she go into a childrens home etc ?

if its the correct family mark on that 1911 at that point it says 7 children born 5 alive 2 died..

There was a son, birth reg. as Charles Francis Dec 1905 and death as Thomas Francis Mar 1906 - not sure why there's a difference and a daughter, Mary Winifred birth reg. Jun 1911 and death the same qtr.

The third child was another daughter, Mary Agnes birth Mar 1914, death Sep 1914.

James' birth was reg. as James Jeremiah Edward, William as Charles William and John was John Thomas.

Have you transposed the years perhaps. William (Oxford & Bucks) appears to have died in 1917, though his age and service no. seem to be wrong on the CWGC site.

neither can i mark at least not in birmingham thats why i asked if ladywood if his mom had ever mentioned where she went after her parents died...thing is with the name elizabeth she could be under eliza..lizzy...lilie plus of course she could have been sent outside of birmingham...

I think Kellie is actually Nellie, my mother's older sister Ellen Powell

I think my mother went to an orphanage at Coleshill, where my Aunt Nell would visit her when possible.
Aunt Nell was about 15, born 1903 so it would have been difficult for her to visit my mother.

John Thomas Powell [Jackie] died in France 1917. His name is at the Commonwealth War Memorial in Arras.

So by 1918 your mother was in an orphanage, her parents had died and her three brothers had been killed in the war.

That must be terrible.
