I live and work on the South Coast now, but was born in Trafalgar Grove, Francis Rd, Hay Mills in 1957.

As part of a History Week at school the staff have been asked to write about games they played as children and provide photos, if they can.

When I was small we played a lot on a bomb peck in Francis Road. We also played:
  • Skipping in the street
  • British Bulldogs across Francis Road
  • Knock Down Ginger
  • Kick the Cat (with a can and hide & seek NOT a cat...)
  • Oh... and attaching old tyres with rope to lampposts so we could swing!

There were probably lots of other games that I can't recall off the top of my head - and I know we also played in a small park somewhere just off of Kings road, but if anyone has pictures from the late 50's to early 70's of kids playing in the streets or on bomb pecks that you wouldn't mind me using at school, I'd be eternally grateful.

Hop scotch, marbles, tracking, whip and top and knock the door and run ( you tied a piece of string to 2 neighbors doors opposite each other, then you knocked one door and ran, then the person would open it and as she did it would pull the knocker on the other door and they would both stand there, we would be hiding laughing our heads off

Morning Patty. What was that game called where you stood three wooden pegs against a wall with another across the top?. You stood back and then threw a ball in the hope of knocking them all down. I loved marbles and there is a thread about these under glarney's. I still have hundreds but these are the oldest. Jean.

Jean I remember that game but cant think what it's called. I never played marbles as someone I new was playing with his friend, he won a marble off him and his friend was not pleased and threw the marble down hard and it splinted and went in my friends eye and blinded him and a few years later he lost the sight in his other eye. Put me off

What a horrible story Pat. I got into many a scrap over my marbles when the lads used to try and pinch them then Frankie Wooten and Frankie Harris would go sort it for me. We used to do a lot of skipping in those days too. Jean.

You've got it Topsy and thanks. Can you remember the rules only I remember breaking an awful lot of those dolly pegs. Jean.

Mum used to tell us about Tipcat, where a piece of shaped wood was whacked with another bat-shaped piece? Sounds highly dangerous but good fun! I suppose they couldn't afford a bat and ball.
I played hopscotch, when a bit of slate fell off the roof we used it for chalk. "What's the time Mr. Wolf?"...and I was the one who always moved first!

Gg jean. Sorry jean i can,t remember the rules, i can only remember seeing how many you could knock down with a ball and running. And trying to put them back up again.

This thread is triggering so many memories (sadly few of the producing pictographic evidence, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the trip down memory lane)!

Does anyone remember playing a form of leapfrog where a couple, maybe three, boys formed a bent over 'frog' against a wall and everyone else would have to leap on the frog and we'd see how many the frog could carry before collapsing?

I have now found a good picture of children playing on a bomb peck and a gang swinging around a lamp post... if you do find any others (they need to be 11-15 year olds rather than infant/juniors, please) I'm eager to collect them!

And... the boys used to make their own go karts! I'd LOVE to get a picture of them!

It's a lovely scene, and I actually remember trying my hardest to get my hula hoop going in Redhill Road school (I never could!), but really need shots more relevant to the 11-15 age group. Thank you though, brought back fond memories.

LOVE the picture of the boy on the lamp post - I did that a time or two! Do you know what they're playing in the second shot? Looks like Poison... "Went to the shop, to buy a bottle of pop..."

sorry i have no idea what game they are playing..our dad used to make our go carts....four old pram wheels..a plank of wood and some string..ive got 2 family pics taken in our back yard with my sister and bro sitting on one...

They were the closest thing to real currency we had as kids, weren't they?!

What was that L O N D O N thing where one shouted out the letters of London very fast, and turned around at the end of each shout?

Does anyone remember having stilts? made from clothes props and a couple of blocks
wood to put your feet on. And i wrote a letter to my love and on the way i dropped it ,thief thief drop it.

Another one, was two or three balls thrown against the wall. 1, 2 3 oh lary, 4 5 6 oh lary, 7, 8 9, oh lary, 10 o lary catch the ball. 1, 2, 3 and over etc.

All my friends could do handstands up the wall, some could do cartwheels, Nan didn't like me doing them..not "ladylike" in the street with your skirt tucked in!!!
