Perry Barr Village

I think it's worth having a thread dedicated to Perry Barr village as this was once a distinct area (not Perry Village which is the area around St John's Church, Church Road).

This thread deals specifically with Perry Barr village on Birchfiekd Road. The village was located on Birchfield Road, centred around the train station and old Crown & Cushion Inn. This postcard shows the village.

The spire of Christ Church (church now demolished) can be seen in the distance and the roof of Birchfield Road school is to the right of the church spire. Just out of view to the extreme left would have stood the old Crown & Cushion Inn (the small, pre-1930s C&C). All the buildings to the left have gone and the 1960s underpass/road widening system is now in their place. The 1960s road improvement scheme effectively removed any sense of the village that once stood there. But despite significant change the row of shops to the right can still be seen today as a reminder of the former village.

A thread covering the whole length of Birchfield Road is here https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/birchfield-road-perry-barr.38467/

Yes Thanks it should be Birchfield. Have changed it.

These were the village shops on the Crown & Cushion side of the road which were demolished in the late 1950s/60s.Viv.

In this 1950s photo of those same shops you can see the side of the 1930s Crown & Cushion which was built further back from the road than the earlier C&C. This too would eventually disappear although it hung on until many years after the shops were demolished. I've often thought (although no evidence) that the new road system was conceived as early as the 1930s when this C&C was built due to its position much further back from the road. Maybe WW2 intervened? Viv.

I remember Lilla Hamptons!
I think there was a sweet shop/ newsagent in that block and a Fish and Chip shop.

The postcard from Postie (RIP) was posted on the Perry Barr thread. Deserves mention here as the sender mentions The Village.

Sure does reserve a mention. The village and card are beautiful! Oh how I wish we could turn the clock back for just a little peak…..
