Palmer Street

building on the right still standing mike...building on the left gone...i did not realise there was a cannings building there

Mike, the building on the right was Cannings. I don't know about the building on the left. The demolished building in the foreground is I reckon the site of the High Stool Cafe. The centre four story building is Parmer Street flats. East and West Lodge. I understand they were originally an army Barack, (not confirmed), but then used by Birmingham Housing Department to house people who had been evicted.

They were very basic walk up four story flats with painted brick walls and asphalt floors. Coal fires and a loo on that attached tower on the back that was accessed via a balcony. Each dwelling shared a bathroom between two dwellings. When the council evicted some family's for none payment of rent the council was obliged to find them accommodation. These were a kind of halfway house that were very cheap to rent and gave an opportunity to clear any rent arrears, apparently.
