Im looking for a place to start and help with my family on my Dad's side. My Dad came to Birmingham in 1964 from Dublin.
I know all his brothers names. I never met my grandparents. I have scant details. Is there a start point?
Any advice would be appreciated...

Tracing Irish ancestors can be a little tricky, there are a far fewer records available than there are for England/Wales. The problem can be getting to the 1920s which is when you will be able to find records online. Personal knowledge is sometimes the only way.

When was your dad born and do you know your grandparents' names? Personal knowledge

Appreciate your response, my Dad was born 1945, always said he was a war baby.
I have his death certificate. I met his brothers and sister when I was small. They still lived in Dublin, Oliver Bond flats. That would have been mid 70s.
He always said his Dad worked the docks and had a badge??
Not great maths but perhaps Dad's dad might have been born around 1920?

as said given the lack of irish records this could be difficult but just in case anything may turn up i dont think you have given us the first names of your dad and his brothers ?

So it seems you have to bridge the gap between your dad's birth and his dad's.

Do you have access to your dad's marriage certificate or birth certificate which would be better.

Though even that might not be enough as O'Neill is such a common name.

Stuart welcome , was it a badge or a button as it was also called, any docker carrying a button would be assure of work when ever casual labour was required on the docx in those days

Thanks to all. My Dad's name was Terence.
He said his Dad was guaranteed work due to the badge.
I don't have his birth certificate sadly. Perhaps that's where I need to start, Im not even sure of his mom and dad's first names.
Mom and Dad got married in Dublin in 1962 then came to Birmingham soon after.
They lived in Samson Rd, then Grafton Rd. I was born in the house on Samson Rd.
I thought it would be difficult.

Hi Lyn. My dad's name was Terence, brother's were Tony, Reggie, Buddy and Tommy. Sister was May. May lived by The Greet in Tyseley.

hi stuart dont give up..something may turn up..so as far as you know your dad was terence oneill/onneil (there are a couple of ways of spelling that) he was born in dublin in 1945 in..did he have a middle name ? and what date and month was he born?
