Old street pics..

I can see that the picture in post #4021 in not Oxford street off Digbeth. Could it be Digbeth taken from Oxford street? Merry Christmas Moss.

I love these especially Dent's garage I had a toy one with a sign just like that, it was white.
What a good idea maybe we should all do Calendars.
I love the old shops. I looked at Kind Hearts and Coronets the protagonist working in the drapers. The glass fronted smart wooden doored cabinets. A calendar on old shops would be nice.

Astoness, great work with the photos, so, to everyone out there who loves Lyn's and other members contributions in the photo department (courtesy of the good old Birmingham Library) please take the trouble to fill in the Questioner on the proposed cuts and let them know just what we would all be missing out on if they closed the photo archives.

thanks jimbo and i dont want to start an in depth discussion on this thread as we do have a seperate thread about the proposed plans to deny the public the chance to look at the photographs that are stored in the library of birmingham that have bought so much pleasure to so many people especially on this forum....i shall be writing a personal letter to bcc on the subject...all i will say is what is the point in locking the photos away??..who will see them ?? how will authors of history books be able to add photos to their books?? this is our history and it looks like we are going to be denied it and to my mind if these cuts go ahead then they may as well burn the lot...will say no more now..just enjoy the photos that we are able to post at the min..all the best.

Great choice of pics Lin!
My neighbour in Little King St pre 1966 worked at Hampstead Colliery - used to come home covered with the coal dust !
My wife's Aunt lived at the back of Dents garage - she used to pop in for dinner when at Manor Park Girls school,
and we lived in Birchfield 1976-1987 and remember the shops well.
Great to see them!
Bri

thanks for those memories bri...its hard for me to imagine a colliery right on me doorstep...and of course we must not forget the distaster that struck it in 1908 killing so many men...

Great photos Lyn, real reminder of 50s/60s Brum, most of the shopping complex's could have been anywhere in the Birmingham area, and couple reminded me of my youthful stamping ground, had a few pints in the Red Lion Too. Paul

Great set of photos Lyn. Wondering if the first showing Kirton's is any relation to Billy Kirton (former footballer) who had the shop on Kingstanding Road at the junction with Dyas Road. Seems a bit of a coincidence re the name.

Not seen any of these before, thanks for posting Lyn. There are certainly still many more surprises and new evidence waiting to be uncovered in the archives. Viv.

Nice photo Carolina. Don't think I've seen a photo of Corporation St with an island in the centre before, especially as the traffic is going in the same direction on both sides. Viv.

I have a vague recollection of the island in the middle to allow pedestrians to cross. Picture would be late 1940s just possibly first few years of the 1950s.
