David I can tell you that the shop belonged to a Mr Stiles a pork butcher and the damage was done to his shop premises over remarks he made in support for Germany in 1914. It must have been pretty bad whatever he said because he never traded there again.

Thanks Phil. What was said may not have been too bad because there were reports of people kicking dachshunds in the streets in anti-German acts.
 
I like your picture of The Barton Arms and the Hippodrome but have you got any photos showing the shops nearer to 6 ways. I'm trying to find a picture of 10 High Street Aston when it was Fawcetts Ironmongers. I wonder if anyone has that in their collection.
 
hi brumgum. thats a great picture,the cafe was on gosta green the houses were in woodcock st. the passage in between lead to the holt brewery stables the building back of the lorry was part of the brewery. terry

Thank's Terry:biggrin:it did confuse me a bit:05.18-flustered: but i think I've got it now. My family rented a house in Aston Rd that was owned by the brewery.
Typical old Brum terrace, love the chimney's. i think you can always determine if it's an an old Brum terrace by the design of the chimney and it's pots, i can always tell anyway:abnormal:.

Bernie, thanks for Avenue Road but unfortunately its the wrong area. The one you put on is B19 whereas the one I want is in Handsworth B21. Please keep trying though. :encouragement: Carol
 
I now need the help of mikejee next. An early 1900s map of Queens Road, Aston please, if you have it, Mike. Thanks again for the link to the pics Bernie - I now need the map to sort out which bits of Queens Road they relate to.
