Have found some better pictures of the City, including a couple taken from the roof of St Martins House when my brother in law was caretaker in the
mid 1990s Bye Bernard

I remember walking up that ramp and turning right to get some chips after a long day shopping with my mom and aunt, that bought back some lovely memories Bernard, thanks for posting them.

All those pictures bring back memories Bernard, especially No.2. The hours I spent in that area certainly gets the old mind ticking back. Thanks Bernard. Barry.

Thanks Bernard I too like picture two as Pete's brother had a stall there for several years. Wendy knows him as Brian the watch. Loved the place. Jean.

Hello again, nice to be back, when I retired in 1995 my wife and I used to
come into Birmingham a couple of times a week, Enid was a shopperholic,
so she went round the shops, and I wondered around with my Samsung
10/40 taking photographs. Have recently found my album of those pics and
would like post a few, hope you like them Bernard

Thanks again for posting your photo's Bernie. We are going to do the same only I am not a shopaholic. Maybe it is because Pete follows me round like a puppy dog. I will have to start cutting his lead off. Never too late. Take care. Jean.

Am I right in thinking that as a kid going to this place with my Mom around the 1940s,it was known as the FOOD OFFICE???????

Oh those are lovely photos Bernard, I absolutely love the one of the ramp down to the market......ahhh, memories. Keep em coming.

On Thursday 17th April 2003 Forward was set alight by an act of vandalism. The fire has done irreparable damage to Forward. The morning after the fire, (Good Friday), contractors working on behalf of Birmingham City Council enclosed the charred figures in a giant wooden coffin. Forward was the pinnacle of Mason's public artworks. Whatever one thought of it it is a huge loss in the world of public art. The discussion on what should be done about the gap in Centenary Square will certainly create as much hot air as the sculpture itself. Clearly Birmingham needs to take greater care of its public art collection.
