Was King Edward VI Grammar School, on the south side of New Street half-way between High Street/ Worcester Street and Stephenson Street, the original site of The Guild of the Holy Cross (founded 1392, abolished 1545, demolished 1707 and replaced by a neo-classical building which in turn was demolished 1830 and replaced by a large gothic building by Charles Barry architect of the Houses of Parliament. All demolished 1936)?

Note on posts 300 and 301 you can see the old Lamb house just before demolition, and them a couple of years later, what was built on the site. The advert on the building next door shows up , as it did on earlier photographs as it was being demolished.

lyn love the Town Hall pics,I haven't been inside for years but thats just how I remember it.Bull Street looks very Dickensien.
Thanks for posting them. Lynne

thanks lynne and kelly..you know the more i look at some of those pics the more i am convinced that such a lot of our historical buildings need not have been demolished..they were strong and sound and would well have outlasted the rubbish that replaced them..we will never get them back..the architecture on them was worth its weight in gold..all we have are the pictures...well thats my moan for the day..

My future wife's uncle got married in 1951 at the old Registry Office in the city centre, he lived in Phillips Street, Newtown and with other relatives and friends we caught the No 6 tram to Martineau Street. We had reached Paradise Street when he realised it was 2.30 he was getting married, not 1.30, and since it was only 1 o'clock he insisted we passed the time away in the 'Woodmans', he was very nervous about taking the wedding vows and accepted all the 'Dutch Courage' that was offered him, so that by the time we got him to the registry office he could hardly stand...... were we in trouble. That was the first and last time I visited the Woodman Inn, but remember how fabulous the interior was.
