OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Pleas don’t expect any identification of the cars in #890. Haven’t a clue.

The Triumphs outside the Strathallen are the big ones, 2000 or 2500. Between them and the Mk2 Jag are a Cresta and an XJ6. Obviously the sales director giving the managers a pep talk.

I had a Triumph 2000 back in the 70`s. A nice car but with a few faults, like the o/d solenoid kept blowing, & the gear stick had a habit of coming adrift when i put it in reverse. Bloody fast though !

This is one of the "walls" best I can do is Pershore Road hoardings in 1972, if you hover over the photo and note 1 Pershore Road all it means is the 1st photo!!
Couple of nice cars , big crane out the back and a sign for motorcycles. Old lampost and a selection of chimney pots.

EDIT - for correct location see Grea's post below #898

Travelled along Pershore Rd daily for twenty five years, except when I went the long way around M42, the "Motor Cycle" advert was familiar. Virtually opposite The Stirchley Bowl which I see on Google has now been demolished. Is nothing sacred?

154 Clarence Road Handsworth 1974, taken around christmas judging by the snow in the windows. Selection of cigarette adverts around the building and love the toys its somewhere you would go window shopping to write your list. Also note the Newspaper advert hordings, Reveille, something Pictorial as well as the Evening Mail and Sunday Mercury.

Another one where we have seen a similar view this time we have more of the shops on this side of the road,
Mere Green Road / Lichfield Road Roundabout, this is 1981, selection of shop fronts and a supermarket at the end but cannot work out which one. The zebra crossing goes onto the traffic island although not anymore, you have to walk the long way around the island. Note also the price of petrol 133p a galleon not a litre. and the car parking under the building.

Ford Cortina 2 litre lurking in the side road. Manufactured in 1971. Road tax expired March 1984.

I have to avoid that failing, not you!

There seems to be a difference in the “quality” of the buildings, the Handsworth picture (907) looking somewhat down the scale from the standard of the decorative brickwork in #908.

154 Walford Road in 1974, nice Triumph Dolomite in Fallows Road and a selection of "Parts " in the window. Nice selection of ornamental brickwork around the eaves and the brickwork around the windows looks nie as well.

Another grey day in Birmingham!! 325 Golden Hillock Road, sorry forgot to note the year but probably 1974, similar brickwork to Walford Road, empty streets and a rather empty shop / office.

Another one that I don't think is still a shop but one to watch as it looks as if the paint is peeling off where the sign used to be.

Very difficult to get the right angle because of the island.

I have started to scan the shop photos so a few of them and a few of the others!!

This is 214 - 216 Kingstanding Road - 1974, much a photo of times past - your local hardware store - they are still around but battling. Interesting they seem to be two seperate properties both doing the same thing.

Blast from the past Newtown Shopping Centre in 1969, This is the sign on the lower wall , more of interest is all that is there and is not now. On the right hand side is a shop front, and either side of the Barton Arms are buildings, with a nice selection of cars parked on the side, also note the pram ideal for making a go- cart from the wheels

This is Vesey Street in 1982 although the road sign says Loveday Street probably corner of. Selection of more modern cars than we are used to, and I presume bearing no relation to what is there today - plenty of evidence that building were rapidly disappearing.

#925 is the little row of shops just up from the Golden Hind on Kingstanding Road., near the junction with Greenholm Road. Remember them well.

Think the two hardware shops both belonged to Griffin. “Linden” was a brand name for furniture. Viv.

163 - 165 Soho Road - Handsworth Garage, despite the exotic car names on the wall, I cannot see any of them in sight although there are a fine selection of classics on view. Note the Coka Cola sign for the coffee bar and Fish and Chip shop.
I am quite tempted by the prices on offer - the BMW looks quite a steal at £599.00163 - 165 Soho Road - 75.jpg
