OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

another great set of photos steve...some may think not that old but the ones you are posting are 50 to 60 years old so they are historical in an ever changing birmingham and of course can bring back so many memories for most of the members on this forum...thank you

Thanks again for the great photos Steve. I used to love shoes and remember buying a pair from Ravel. They were a bit posher than Stylo or Freeman Hardy & Willis and that explains why I still have them in their box after only wearing once.

I am sure this is an example of female logic!

Not sure I posted this view - Preedy's with adverts for Ronson lighters on the sides, nice entrance to Victoria Buildings, Estate agent wording in the windows and the signs of all those starlings - remember the noise in the winter evenings.

Earlier (posts 241 and 303) we had the shops to the right of Victoria Buildings now we are to the left and I was confused until I realised Urban Outfitters now occupy both sides of Victoria Buildings.

Were Victoria Buildings residential or business premises?

Ann..
I think they were business premises but I have no idea what they are today.
Apparently the whole block (numbers 1 to 7) are properly referred to as Victoria Buildings and that entrance must just lead to the upper floors.

Well a challenge for the first picture - old church either used as a warehouse or just as a way of attaching adverts.
I can confirm it is 1974 and a look behind the Ford Escort says it is Prin...... ...st. The second picture has a commemorative stone behind the Vauxhall Viva but I cannot get any better than that. Shame to see the building go to waste.

37 -39 Victoria Road in 1975, much to see in this picture, the two Duckhams signs, the thermometer on the wall and just below it the telephone repeater bell. Note the MOT sign attached to the front of the building and the leaded windows in both houses in the bay. Lots of Victoria Roads but this has a telephone number of 554

This one has something for everyone - Witton Road Aston in 1969, working from the left we have shop blinds and lamps over the shop front, a sign for TUF shoes ( my grandads favourite shoes) also the property pointer on the lampost.
Unfortunately only half of the station sign . Under the bridge we have a few bus stop signs and an ideally parked mini, on the other side of the road a road sign with the red triangle above it, and then the shop on the corner, Sprattd signs on the upper walls , and different dog food signs and then in the shop window a selection of dolls!!

This is one of the "walls" best I can do is Pershore Road hoardings in 1972, if you hover over the photo and note 1 Pershore Road all it means is the 1st photo!!
Couple of nice cars , big crane out the back and a sign for motorcycles. Old lampost and a selection of chimney pots.

EDIT - for correct location see Grea's post below #898

Finally iconic hotel on the Hagley Road The Strathallen Hotel from 1972. Loooking like they had bunch of bricks for a garden refurbishment left over this round building is different. Varied line up of cars out front, those Dolomites on the right? and the "Morse " type Jaguar.

Looking at the telephone numbers I have found that; 422 is Quinton exchange and 554 is Handsworth exchange.
I looked up Victoria road, Handsworth and it is still a garage. Picture attached.Victoria rd 01.png

Pleas don’t expect any identification of the cars in #890. Haven’t a clue.

The Triumphs outside the Strathallen are the big ones, 2000 or 2500. Between them and the Mk2 Jag are a Cresta and an XJ6. Obviously the sales director giving the managers a pep talk.

In #884, the car on the left is a Vauxhall VX 4/90 from the FB series of cars, about 1964, and Vauxhall’s ”nearly made it” response to the Cortina GT. My book says “it will do 90mph and 24mpg, but it’s noisy and doesn’t handle well.” It’s done well for a ten year old though. The other car is an Escort Mk1, not sure about the stripe down the side, maybe a Mexico.

Did the bloke who designed the Strathallen do gasometers as a sideline, or was it the other way round?

Thanks Grea - I only have the back of the photos to go from and as I live north of the City its like a different world - although if I thought of it I could have worked out it was not Pershore Road

You were extremely close, Pershore Rd is just to the right.
