OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Start off with some black and white pictures, this is 1580 - 1582 Pershore Road in 1982, Kenneth Beeson and Co, cannot say I have heard of him however Company checker has him involved for many years as an estate agent. Interest rates of 81/4 % !!, Mid terrace of a row of shops - Midland Red agent on side and a shoe repairers on the other.

1580-82 Pershore Rd -75.jpg

Next up 1680 Bristol Road South this one a few years earlier at 1971and I don't know where to start shop or cars, from the left an upmarket (!) cafe offering Breakfast dinner Luncheons and teas, next York House, followed by the Chemist - love the Kodak advert and the Max factor one too, The music box with records and fancy goods , can I draw your attension to the advert for the Ideal Homes exhibition - I presume at Bingley Hall, lots of things you didn't know you wanted or needed. Mrs G.... Grocery Store Player No. 6 advert in the window with the Green grocers next to that. While it is a black and white image you get the impression that all the frontages were Black and white / Cream. Onto the cars, a fine selection classic brish vehicles and a Bedford(?) van, but look at the size of that Mustang, obviously stood out in a crowd.

1680 Bristol Road South - 71.jpg

Now this location is a bit unusual as it seems there is a property missing- do we know what happened to it?
This is adjacent to 171 Anderton Road in 1974, sorry I don't have a location - but there used to be a building behind the slats and there is a window at first floor, property to the right has a few dodgy slates and we can see the roof line on the chimney on the left. Is that a butchers on the left with the white tiles , next shop has a Tizer advert and you can make out a large set of scales on the counter inside and finally TV shop with blinds down and a TV on the pavement. Only two cars on the pavement is a Ford Escort estate and in front is a possible a Morris 1100 .

This now 1975, I had a picture of the front of this building a while ago - 69, now this is the side entrance - purely for the way it looks - signs propped up against the wall advertising lamb and parts of other animals, we know it is 341 Soho Road and Babbington Road from the sign on the back of the van. I like the brickwork to the wall and the ornamental grill in the opening. A couple of fine chimney stack at the rear.

Babington Road -75.jpg

The ruin is No. 173 Anderton Road, Small Heath. I wonder how it became a ruin.

Finally for tonight Pershore Road Stirchley and Dog Pool lane- now this may be a duplicate as I seem to recall it although I have not moved it to my "posted" folder so perhaps I just looked at it? sure you will tell me. The year is 1972 and so much to see - blinds down to keep the sun off the windows, Rhonas hair stylists, Cook Shop and the Post Office - love the gent with the walking stick looking in the window. Love the Pinta value sign, interstingly if yoou go on Streetview the sign hoarding has been removed and there is a ghost sign behind it.

Inside the large sliding door in 1962, was an area for storing vehicles, I was a butcher's boy for John Rose, the butcher's boy bike was in there, further inside another area included a Model T Ford or Old Austin 7 Chassis, awaiting renovation.
This is what the building looked like in 2011, note the ornamental grill.

This is obviously the corner of Cherry Street and Corporation street and it is really busy. Well before they closed off Cherry Street and pedestrianisation came to Corporation. Again quite a change from today. Lots a winter coats about and plenty of shopping bags. First car looks like one of the large Mercedes and something a bit smaller behind.

Thanks for that update same grill and same sort of board with prices on

This latest batch of picture are from the streets folder - generally a street view with a hording, picture were originally used when advertisement applications were made to the council hence the 403/A reference - pictures were usually outlined with a red chinagraph pencil - thankfully this comes off with varnish remover.
So this is 203 Anderton Road in 1974, nothing amazing apart from the age and with Janets views we note how it has all changed.
First we wouldn't have an advert like that today - what fun can be had from cigarettes!. Old style lamp post, and a selection of cars, I love the view any street in any town.

This is 413 Golden Hillock Road again 1974, this time a fine end of terrace with an interesting roof line. Like the sash windows with the brick surrounds, the brick molding under the eaves and the fine chimneys. I like how there are a few steps up to the front doors and we can just see the arch of the alleyway a few doors down.

I cannot offer much on the next picture 812 Walsall Road in 1969, cannot work out of its two house, two house made into one . The left hand property seems to be at odds with the layout of the right hand one which suddenly has a gable facing front. There is a little building on the right which looks like a converted garage but then there is a garage to the right of that!!Like all the leaded windows and the front porch door, also the advert for Gill and Sons although it doesn't tell us what they do. Have to mention the fine Ford Zodiac / Zephr - someone will tell me and correct the spelling.

1096 Pershore Road Stirchley 1972 - I am not sure what shock me more the picture of the miner with a cigarette or the fact they were 23p a pack!! Another interesting roof line . The a re couple of things relating to the street scene , firstly the Stirchley area sign hanging and the small pointer with the house number on it - are they a Birmingham "thing" ?
Is it me or has the first house had some alterations, there is a front door but then the shadowing of a door and the window it the same height but seems shorter again with the shadowing underneath?

Well we have come to the end of this particular folder with 1216 Pershore Road1972 , as befits a main road there is a host of parking restrictions on the lamppost as well as the post next to it, Even cheaper cigarettes in this picture. Note the gradual increase in roof line as well as the window above the front door, the small bay window downstairs and the one window on the front with sashes. There is also the classic front wall with privet hedge. You also note that for the Pershore road there are no cars to be seen - one presumes this is a Sunday morning.

This is 812 Walsall Road - definitely two separate houses now - I can see 2 front doors.
The original garage part has now gone and a more modern (70's?) squeezed in the space.

812 at this time had recently changed from a private house to D. Wilson, building contracters. Maybe the right hand side is the working side , and the left where Mr wilson lived

Judging by the next house where the door is was once a small window (toilet or larder?) with the door next to it, Probably they have knocked the wall down between whatever the small window was in to enlarge the front room, and do not like "old fashioned" sah windows, so have replaced it
