OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

As you may recall we are used to informative captions which you then fill in for me and I update the caption - this is one of them - titled looking down Steward Street- firstly the image is a bit stark as I had to lighten it considerably to get a workable image .
Working from the left block of three story buildings , sign below the street name may be recognizable to someone from the font - middle property has the windows boarded up, next we have a strange two / three storey building which is Clourall products, with some products on the pavement then further down the road is every shape and size of properties with every variation of chimney - classic. Best of all though is the vehicle with the flat back outside the Products building. Sorry and the gas lamp on the corner

This next image has a bit of personal history attached - firstly location as you know without me telling you is Great Hampton Street, Nos. 72 and 73 included - there are so many companies both large and small, some have a room and some whole building by the look of it , and so many styles with castellation on the left most interesting.
My connection - in the early 1980's I was on a training scheme with council planning department ( YTS) and worked around different departments - one was conservation and I went round a rather derelict building, one on the right to help measure up for some scheme or other - if someone can post a now picture you can see the changes made .

I seems to recall this next image but feel for the atmosphere alone it bears repeating- we are on the corner of Well Street , Barclays Bank in front of us as a man in a long coat and hat walks towards us, the misty view shows " The Trees across the road vans cars and a bus leaving the city towards Hockley

20230108111714_04.jpg

We now move to Lawrence Street and I think Duke Street, a rather poor picture but for a couple of things - firstly the child on the left which anywhere else would look like a " Banksey" picture !! and the second item is the man with a cart in the middle of the road - probably never been seen for many years now - and the gas lamp on the corner - just one of those set in time images.

Now if I am a correct, from the previous image if we turn 180 degrees we come to this view. Chadwick Engineering three storey brick built works with the Ansells pub further down the road. Metal framed windows with openings that tilt backwards and a fine selection Austin Moris cars on the road.

Last one for tonight and again no location although it may be Steward street and may be 1950's and this is a scene we no longer see, the rear of terraced house - there is everything in this view back passages, out house attic windows chimneys and the rear extension for the outhouses - wonderful - so I will be back try and post a few images each evening - take care.

i agree steve if someone could look up to see where arthur black was that should give us the location

Arthur Black (General Smiths) (posts 1678-1680) was located at 107 Steward Street. Arthur died in January 1957 but his business continued, advertising in 1958. The latest newspaper advert for the business I could find was in the Birmingham Daily Post in September 1975.

First tonight is the Ivy Bush Inn on Hagley Road, rather an imposing view with the large lamp with its supporting iron work, the painted corner sign but then the tiny clock below the lamp. Love the sash and leaded windows and the enamel road signs. Inregueing is the man stood on the corner I wonder what his story is, passer by manager or a local waiting to go in?

again apologies if I duplicate a posting let me know and I will tidy up.

My lists tell me that this is the site of the Maypole, which it may be but that means nothing to me Vienna ( sorry old quote someone may get it!)

But plenty to see from the telephone pole which is more akin to one at the side of a railway line , note the supporting post. the large hoarding for the Tudor Theatre, and the imposing Gold Leaf adverts - unknown these days . and a number of signs A frames and a tired looking house to the left among the trees.

Next up is taken on trust from the list so I am open to assistance, this is the " new " Crossed Guns High Street Kings Heath - I have posted a picture of the old one previously, made in the Tudorbethan style with black and white woodwork, faux balconies supports and stonework.
Still no years but these are photos of photos so lost in the mists of time.

This picture is The Towers, but did not show on my list taken soon after opening - (possibly) , very clean building and site but in the classic M & B style. Like the styling on the chimneys too, and also the mirror style down the central entrance.

There is a "Towers Inn" listed in 1960 phone book on Walsall Road. It has a Great Barr phone number.

Interestingly I went past this site a few days ago and it is now a building site - it has gone through various incarnations over the years.
This is the original version - The Kingstanding, large pub site standing in Kingstanding and on the " circle", another classic symmetrical M & B pub in historic styling.
Over the years the site was flattened and a shopping precinct was built on the site with a much smaller pub on the site - over the years the site the precinct become more run down - the pub caught fire and the site is now in the process of been cleared for a supermarket.
( A quick Google for information showed that this is common image so not unique)

We now move onto High Street Harborne taken November 1990, unfortunately that was the title and listed as 1- 15 so the descriptions will be brief and pretty much what you can see. Also as these are more in the modern era there are vehicle everywhere!!
First up a general view of Henry Wong - I may be wrong but this has the look of a former bank premises, to the right is a television shop when was the last time you saw one of them?

20230108113715_01.jpg

Next we have the Royalty, I believe this is a former Cinema which is now a bingo hall, interesting frontage, with the large building behind, to the right we have The Vine which interestingly has its car park to the left of The Royalty?

As the area has changed from what is there now I believe this is the corner of High Street and Ravenhurst Road, lots of old style " little shops" unfortunatly the corner property has been covered in Music posters for various bands - Used to like seening those - of course we don't approve of fly posting !!

20230108113715_12.jpg

In this shot we can see the Station Road petrol station in the background so it is near there , former pub I presume and on the corner of High street and Greenfield Road - the Royalty is behind us. Seen better days with the windows boarded up downstairs, note the telephone box - a rare item these days.

It helps if you look through the roll first - next we have this closer view of "Arthur Black " who now has a full name and an updated building with new external plasterwork. We cannot tell any more about the area although the name may provide a location for those of you with the books.

I have this photo. I am not quite sure if it is a much better copy , ot just taken at the same time. 107 Steward St makes it the timy apprndage marked in red on the 1950s map. The ruined church is marked on the 1880s map as St Marks Mission Room, in the 1932 Kellys as St Peters Mission Room, and not listed in the 1939 Kellys
