OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

As you may recall we are used to informative captions which you then fill in for me and I update the caption - this is one of them - titled looking down Steward Street- firstly the image is a bit stark as I had to lighten it considerably to get a workable image .
Working from the left block of three story buildings , sign below the street name may be recognizable to someone from the font - middle property has the windows boarded up, next we have a strange two / three storey building which is Clourall products, with some products on the pavement then further down the road is every shape and size of properties with every variation of chimney - classic. Best of all though is the vehicle with the flat back outside the Products building. Sorry and the gas lamp on the corner

This next image has a bit of personal history attached - firstly location as you know without me telling you is Great Hampton Street, Nos. 72 and 73 included - there are so many companies both large and small, some have a room and some whole building by the look of it , and so many styles with castellation on the left most interesting.
My connection - in the early 1980's I was on a training scheme with council planning department ( YTS) and worked around different departments - one was conservation and I went round a rather derelict building, one on the right to help measure up for some scheme or other - if someone can post a now picture you can see the changes made .

I seems to recall this next image but feel for the atmosphere alone it bears repeating- we are on the corner of Well Street , Barclays Bank in front of us as a man in a long coat and hat walks towards us, the misty view shows " The Trees across the road vans cars and a bus leaving the city towards Hockley

We now move to Lawrence Street and I think Duke Street, a rather poor picture but for a couple of things - firstly the child on the left which anywhere else would look like a " Banksey" picture !! and the second item is the man with a cart in the middle of the road - probably never been seen for many years now - and the gas lamp on the corner - just one of those set in time images.

Now if I am a correct, from the previous image if we turn 180 degrees we come to this view. Chadwick Engineering three storey brick built works with the Ansells pub further down the road. Metal framed windows with openings that tilt backwards and a fine selection Austin Moris cars on the road.

Last one for tonight and again no location although it may be Steward street and may be 1950's and this is a scene we no longer see, the rear of terraced house - there is everything in this view back passages, out house attic windows chimneys and the rear extension for the outhouses - wonderful - so I will be back try and post a few images each evening - take care.

Arthur Black (General Smiths) (posts 1678-1680) was located at 107 Steward Street. Arthur died in January 1957 but his business continued, advertising in 1958. The latest newspaper advert for the business I could find was in the Birmingham Daily Post in September 1975.

I remember Kroy Refrigeration, I used to pass on the bus to Town, I thought that's where it was.
