So very very true! We look at our grandchildren who we love dearly, they have no idea of what we dealt with. They are all embroiled is the here and now, and to be fair that’s what we did! However it would be a great learning experience for them to look back 50 years and see the revolutionary changes that have occurred, I think more than any other time in history, so far!
 
I'm probably a generation younger than most posters on here.

I can look back now and imagine that it was probably quite hard for my dad and step mom when they were growing up - probably less so for my mom - and, even though my mom left when I was 4 and we were far from well off, I can appreciate that I had it so much better. But I never gave it any thought when I was child or even when I was in my 20s.

And I'd guess that my grandparents had an even harder childhood - for a start I never had to deal with a sibling's death.

Even if they didn't have much, you'd like to think that they grew up in a loving household, though I don't think that was particularly the case for my step mom or my maternal grandmother.

Very well said!
I think that most families lived within themselves, not all but more than today. We/I knew what my lot was and for the most part lived within, not that we did not have aspirations of grandeur! If you just look in a modern kitchen, microwave, ice maker (ours makes craft ice), 8 burner stove, self cleaning over, those things weren’t even dreamt of when I was going on. And look at cars!
And look in the mirror, some of us were the facilitators of those things. Keep dreaming, it’s good for the soul. I think!

Radio was a world of imagination. TV never lets your imagination run riot, it is presented on a plate so no need to think.

It was an adult world and us kids had our own called childhood. Sometimes the two worlds collided resulting normally in us kids getting our ears boxed.

We did not care who our favorite footballer was married to. As long as he wore the proper colored shirt on Saturday afternoon and knew where the goal mouth was, thats what mattered

We had no need of " Celebrities". We had real Hero's borne from the worlds greatest conflict. Every boy knew the names such as Douglas Bader , "Sailor "Mallan and Guy Gibson. Real role models, not someone who has won a fixed talent contest.

Thank you Cadeau for reminding me that I was of that generation to enjoy the last real childhood.

Children today haven't got time to be children they're old before their time nowadays
