Night watchman

Viv when my Grandad passed away in 1939, his occupation was listed as a Night Watchman. He was limited in his career due to losing his leg in the First World War with injuries to the other.
I think the term then meant what we’d class as a security guard today.

One year in my pre teen years me amd a couple of mates used to spend hours with a watchman, directly outside a recreation ground on Communication Row. After school we used to race eoun to see him and just sit there captivated with the fire, I was never that engrossed at home looking at the fire even that dinner time winter 1963, when I had my feet that close to the heat the pair of oversocks were smoldering away while I was till wearing them, I never noticed a thing onlythat they were a pair of Birmigham City football socks. We were devastated when th job finished we were asking when and where he was going to , ban you believe it they stare at mobile phones nowadays,

How times change Dion….we were entertained by simple things then….
I’m glad to hear those socks weren’t a pair of Aston Villa’s!
