I am interested in finding out more about the Furniture shop, my Great Grandfather Alfred Wilson, started and my Grandfather ran until the 1960's.
It was on the Corner of Newtown Row and St. John street.
My Great Grandfather also started the Theodore Street Mission, which my mother remembers attending as a child.
Names I am researching are Wilson, Troop and Lee

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum. Our member Jules65 started a thread 'Theodore St. Mission'. If you go to the search box and enter Theodore St. Mission, I am sure Jules would be happy to hear from you.

Welcome David enjoy :)

I'm Newtown Row Born but to young at the time to know the shop

Welcome to the forum Dave, I remember the shop well it was on the corner of New John Street West/Newtown Row. My parents married in July 1923 and I have a receipt for the furniture they bought from A. Wilson, 136 Newtown Row (opposite Newtown Palace) on the letterhead states "established nearly 40 years".

This is what they bought:

5 ft. Walnut Sideboard - Bow Front - £12.00
7 piece Oval Suite? Rexine £8.8.00
Pair Dark Oak Tables - Oval Glass £7.7.00
Matress 24/- Overlay £1.00
Bedstead 25/- £3.9.00

Total £31.4.00

Sylvia,

Would you be able to scan the receipt? I would love to see the Letterhead.
I visited the shop in the late fifties, usually on a Wednesday (half day closing?) in the school holidays. To "help" my grandfather. I believe the shop was compulsory purchased by the council in the sixties and demolished to build Newtown Shopping Centre.
The Shop seemed huge, but rather old. I believe there where Stables at the back for the horse that pulled the Furniture delivery van in the 1930's.

Dave, I'm sorry but don't know how to scan - I have the equipment but not the "know how". If you would like to send me an Instant Message with your address I could photostat it and send it by post.
