Missing Marriage

PattiW

knowlegable brummie
I wonder if anyone can help please. I have found my gt grandparents on 1891 cenus - James & Sarah Ann Johnson. I have been trying to find a marriage record but without success. I think they were both born about 1867. The story I have been told is that she was Jewish & he was Catholic & her family disowned her. Her name before 'marriage' was Sarah Ann Amos. It's possible that they never married and that she just took his name but I would appreciate it if anyone can turn a marriage record up that looks like it could be them. In 1891 they lived Delhi Terrace, Angelina Street, Aston, Birmingham. Thanks

There is a marriage of James Johnson and Sarah Amos 3rd quarter 1845 in Manchester, volume 20 page 509.

Thanks for that Lloyd but that was before they were born. I'm also having trouble finding her death record. Do you know if when somebody registered a death in the 1920s whether they had to show a birth cert too? I'm just wondering if he death could be reistered under Amos. Though I've had problems finding that too.

i couldnt find a marriage that fitted. theres a death of sarah a amos in 1942 birmingham aged 72yrs.

Thanks for that. That would be close enough to the age she would have been in 1942 but her grandaughter is still alive and she said she died around 1928 in Birmingham. I can't find anything around that date & I'm wondering if that wasn't her real name. Bit of a brick wall. Thanks for your help though.

In 1911, James is a widower and living with his children Nellie and Florence in Balsall Heath Road. So Sarah must have died between 1901 and 1911, but can't find a record of that within the right age range. As you think Sarah died c1928, are you sure you have the right family here?

In 1911, James said he had been married for 20 years. Whether that means up to his wife's death or to-date is uncertain.

Thank you Icarus. That is definitely the right family because Nellie was my grandmother & Florence was my great aunt. TBH I had believed that she had died quite soon after Florence's birth who was born in 1901 or late 1900. Twenty years sounds about right for the marriage because they are listed on the 1891 census and could have recently got married. I was told she had died 1928ish by her grandaughter but she's in he late 80s and may be confused about which grandmother she's referrring to. Your info is really helpful as when I tried to search 1911 census I had no luck. Is there a ref for that?

im a bit confused as to which census you have for 1891 for james and sarah? the one i can find with james johnson and sarah johnson both 25 were living miles street aston.

james was an ornamental brass tube drawer born bham and sarah a steel pen maker born dudley. am i looking at the correct census?

thanks patti, its just that in your first post you said they were living angelina st. aston so i wasnt sure if its the correct one. ive looked for marriages but not been successful im afraid. as you say, maybe they never got married.

the only death that fits with other info you have is sarah "jane" johnson died 1908 jan-mar birmingham born abt 1866 (age 42 at death)

Now you've said that I've realised that I've got that as one of my possibles. I think that could well be her. I think her grandaughter has confused her death with Sarah's husband because I think he died around 1928. I suppose whoever registered Sarah's death may have made a mistake or maybe she used another name sometime. I might have to bite the bullet and send for the cert. I think I know what she died of and the clue will be in who registered the death hopefully. Thanks for your help. I still can't find the marriage though. She was chucked out by her family for marrying out and marrying 'beneath' her! So they may well have just liived together and she took his name.

Shera sorry that was my mistake about the address. They were living in Angelina Street in 1901. I think they did a lot of moonlight flits so I'm lucky they're on the census at all!

if you send for the cert from bham register office they will check for you that it is husband james registering the death. if its a different husbands name they wont charge you. i have two lots of grandparents in my family tree who never got married but pretended they did!

Thanks that's really useful. He may not have registered it. It may have been Nellie, my Nan, his daughter. When her mother died she had to take over and be mum to her little sister Florence & when she married, James & Florence came to live with her. He had a teensy bit of a drink problem and so did Sarah by all accounts! Poor little Nellie had a bit of a life. So if I contact Birmingham registry office hopefully they can check whether it was James or Nellie. Thanks so much for your help. This particular part of the family intrigues me because of the Jewish connection because obviously they would have, at some point, come from Europe or Russia. I'm still working on Sarah's birth. On the 1891 census it says she was born in Dudley Warwickshire & on the 1901 census it says she was born in Worcester Worcestershire. I've found a birth record for a Sarah Ann Amos in 1867 in West Bromwich. The date sounds about right but I'm not sure whether West Bromwich would be the same as Dudley or Worcester. If you have any thoughts on that, I'd be grateful. I've also found a Sarah Ann Amos on 1871 Census for Wednesbury born around 1860 but I have my doubts about that one. I've also found an Eleanor S Amos on 1881 Birmingham census born in Dudley, Staffs around 1866. The reason I have saved this record is because Nellie, my Nan's name was really Eleanor & her mother may have used her 2nd name Sarah as people do. Her grandaughter thought she was Sarah Ann but she may have been wrong about that. But I can't find a birth record for Eleanor S. Sorry if this is a bit confusing.

Hi Patti

The 1911 census reference RG78PN1092 RD383 SD2 ED3 SN12

Or just do a search for James+widower+Nellie

Nellie is listed as Nellie Elena Fanny.
