Gone but not forgotten. R.I.P.
Well we must be doing something right. When I took over this site we had just approaching 10.000 members, and numbers were dropping rapidly. If you look now we have over 13.000 members and this figure is increasing ever quickly by the day.
Now, I could get all big headed and say that this increase is purely down to my efficient handling and personal natural charm. ( I could, but I would be telling lies )
It is all down to the unique blend of Brummie we have using this site, each one contributing in their own special way.
There are so many unsung heroes on this site that to mention anyone by name would be impossible, and unfair.
What I WILL say to each and every member of this site, wherever you may be is
THANK YOU ALL, if you wasn't so precious I wouldn't be running this site, God bless one and all, lets go FORWARD together.
Your humble friend
Postie :wave::blush:

oh blimey im filling up here...:'(:'( of course you are right jim we have great folk on this forum but at the end of the day if you didnt come to the rescue when you did i would not be able to post this message...

thank you jim and thanks to everyone who stuck with it...:)

Well said Jim. To be honest I don't know how you put up with some of us at times:rolleyes: but I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking on the task of keeping this forum up and running as I am sure it was not an easy decision?. All the best for yourself and the forum from Jean. :):):)

Trust me, the folk on this forum make my job a pleasure, like I said, " God bless you all"

I think it's because this site lets you do 20th Century genealogy which a lot of forums and the rootsweb mailing lists don't for fear of mentioning a person who may still be living.

Hi Jim,

I agree with Astoness if you and all the people that help you with the forum had not saved it then we would not have this great place with lot's of great people on sharing information. helping each other it is a pleasure to be part of the forum it is by far any I have been on.
Keep up the good work Paula

Postie, the more I hear about you, the more I am convinced we are related.
Whether we are kin or not please accept my congratulations and thanks for keeping this great forum going from strength to strength.

Yes. Thanks Jim for keeping the forum going, I see 10 new members today and almost a quarter of a million posts

I agree with all thats been said and add my thanks to you Jim and all your great helpers. I know members on here have been a great help to me over the time I have been a member. Thank you all

"FORWARD"
Very apt choice of words Jim......Well Done

Chocks;)

Postie...thanks for your smashing message. Great news all round.....we say Eh in Canada a lot.:):)

I am not a Brummie but but couldn't feel more at home and welcome than on this Forum. Thanks for making that possible Postie and long may you continue "FORWARD" on our behalf:thumbsup:
Mike

Thanks Jim your not so bad yourself lol
I think you deserve a drink for all the hard work you do cheers

John,

Many just ask a question and we don't see them again after they have their answer, but at least it provides a new talking point. On the other hand, quite a few have stayed and take part in discussions on other subjects and that is certainly to be welcomed. I don't think that pattern has really changed over the years that I have been a member.

Maurice :)

I once tried to do my own survey by going through the membership in alphabetical order only got to about G
Many were guests so there is no record as to their length of stay ,some became members, asked a question on one day and never logged on again to even see if they got an answer, some
asked a question, got the answer and never logged on again
Many became members stayed a short while, never posted and then left.
Then we have those who are no longer with us RIP, the flouncers who fell out with us and those we politely asked to leave.
Over the years 22000 may have had a look and become members and are still on record but I would hazard a guess that the true Active membership is in the hundreds now.
For example just the members on this thread
Dotteau joined 2008 last seen( logged on)2017
Motorman mike 2008 last seen 2016
Patty 2006 last seen 2015
Paula 1964, 2008 last seen 2014
Marriew 2008 last seen 2014,

I notice everyone who joins the forum is allocated a membership number by the system.
The latest member to join has just been allocated membership number 115,004
So I suppose all we can say is this number of people over the years have chosen a username and a password and clicked the register button !

The lowest membership number I can see is 5 ...

I suppose it depends on what criterion is used to define a member ...:)

Recently I was looking at this website, which analyses internet activity in a typical computer minute, and also compares this year's activity with that of last year:- https://www.visualcapitalist.com/what-happens-in-an-internet-minute-in-2019/

That led me to wonder whether membership trends are generally rising or falling, whether activity on the site is likewise rising or falling, roughly what percentage of our members live away from Birmingham, etc. Most sites have a stats engine built into the site code, though the sort of information this produces can vary.

Not wishing to have Jim (Postie), Warren or the mods running around just to satisfy my idle curiosity - they have enough to do, I just wondered if the general trend was up or down, and whether there were any facts that were surprising or of general interest.

Maurice

The sort of thing that interests me too Maurice. I’ve closely watched the membership numbers over the last few years, but it doesn’t tell us much except that they’ve gone up. From memory there were around 9,000/10,000 members when we changed over to Xenforo. I personally think they’re rising at a faster rate since that time. But that tells us very little about why people join, how they use the site and whether they contribute. If we had some of these sorts of stats, we could make the site even more interesting and useful.

One thing which all mods are committed to is making sure it’s informative, relevant and safe for all ages to use. Hopefully we’re getting there. Viv.

The thing about membership numbers that has puzzled me is that if you go through a great many of the members they registered one day ,never made a post and have not visited since they registered, which in many cases was years ago which means that our membership numbers do not relate to 'true' members.
I did this a few years ago and was surprised at the numbers of non returners.
You can read the posts on here without registering so why do so. Alberta

Maybe some folk confuse BHF with how their Facebook - or similar - accounts operate. F/Book seems insistent that you register. That's why I am not there. :)

I seem to remember, Alberta, when I last checked, that non-members can see posts but they won't see full-sized images and they can't use the Search function. And of course they can't post.

Not sure whether this is all still the case but it appeared to me at the time that if you wanted to see a post in its full glory, you needed to register.

Chris

register to join facebook,,,, its more like applying for a loan....
And they want a photo!!!! You can only see the pictures on BHF if you register, so possibly that is why everybody registers. Do you keep a note of how many times we each visit?

true you do.or log in

A few years ago it was possible to see how many hours you had been logged on,not sure if you still can.

I just looked at the BHF from a different computer, using a different browser with all cookies cleared, and not logged in, and could fully use the BHF Search. The images were visible but only as thumbnails. Coppermine images were visible full size.
